I've been away for a long time but am getting back into working on my '66 Dart wagon. I've installed new pivot seals on the wiper pivot/shaft. But am having a helluva time getting the pivot thru the hole(s) in the cowl. Any tips to ease installation?

Liquid dishwashing soap?
Are you finding that the seals are too large for the hole? Where did you get the seals, and are you certain they sent the correct ones for your application?

As I recall, the foam seals went thru the holes underneath the dash pretty easily (I may have used some spray silicone), then butted against the underside of the outer cowl when the pivots were bolted in. Here's a pic of the pivots before installation:

Steve is absolutely correct. I forgot about the seal having to slip through the first layer underneath the dash. And yes, the seal does not come through the outer surface of the cowl, it presses against the back surface of the cowl sheet metal to keep water out. The thin foam gasket and tar-like strip are what seals against the bottom surface of the inner sheet metal, sealing off the cabin from leaks.

Clear as mud???

This is what you see from under the dash:

I purchased the seals from Laysons. They're too large in diameter to go thru the holes in the lower cowl panel. I know that's so they're plenty large enough to seal the upper cowl. As you know it's a cramped space and an uncomfortable position to work in. I'll purchase some silicone spray and see if that helps. I'm trying to devise a simple way to compress them enough to go thru the lower cowl panel and then remove the "tool" to allow them to expand again to seal the upper cowl.

are we talking about the layer that you can see from outside the car? or the one that is seen from beneath the dash?

If from under the dash:
Remember how small the inner hole looked before you put the pivot through it? Smaller than a pencil! but you somehow managed to get that dang thing on there right?
...well the same care and patience may be required to see the project through.

btw-if you haven't already realized it: wearing some goggles is not a terrible idea whilst upside-down, under the dash... any rust you might brush off tends to have some sort of Murphy's law of attraction thing going for it

If from outside:

Hire the neighbor kid with the little fingers as a helper. ...make sure there is a fender cover in-place - those buttons on the front of a pair of jeans are not very kind to your paint

It's entirely possible Layson sent you the wrong parts. He has (and deserves) an awful reputation. Avoid buying from him.

The source for wiper seal kits is Schumacher, www.engine-swaps.com .

I can't speak for Layson's, because I haven't had any dealings (good or bad) with them. I can say that I bought all the seals for Aaron's Dart from Schumacher and they all fit great and were reasonably priced. That's why I was a bit surprised you were having such difficulty getting the pivots installed. The hardest thing we encountered with them was getting the "donut" around the pivot shaft - a little liquid soap and it was done.

Agreed.
FYI, a few years back I did a group buy on these seals for my local MoPar club and Schumacher knocked off a couple of bucks on these seal kits for us. I think I ordered 7 or 8 kits. Great folks to deal with over the phone and in person at Carlisle and stuff I have bought from them has always been top-notch.

Too bad he doesn't make a V8 to slant conversion as his conversion motor mounts are first class all the way.

No kidding! I've been looking at all the new mid-size four door pickups out there (Dakota,Tacoma,Canyon/Colorado,Frontier), and each time I go to a dealership, they seem less appealing. I really want a D-100 with four doors and a slant!
