So here's my new issue. When I shift the car into first gear, I hear grinding. The transmission still engages into gear and it rockets off with no problem, the grinding does not get louder. When I shift into second I have no grinding at all, and I can't shift into third. When I shift into reverse, I get minimal grinding. I also have grinding in neutral. I have no vibrations in the gas pedal or on my seat, just on the shift lever. With the clutch fully engaged, the car idles, no movements. When I slowly let on the clutch, it starts to slowly take off and when I take my foot completely off the clutch I'm at a steady pace, no stuttering, no stalling, nothing. Any ideas?

Sounds like your shift linkage might be worn and/or maladjusted, preventing the proper engagement of the gears. Also could be worn(-out) bearings in the transmission, and/or trans oil that is old and/or low.

One thing, just for clarification: When the clutch pedal is pushed down, the clutch is disengaged. When your foot is off the clutch pedal, the clutch is engaged.

Sorry about that, it was late and I had a very taxing day at work. It's the linkage, it's broken.

My Duster has the cheap 3 speed. Nonsynchro 1st gear. Any manual tranny I drive? I always drop it into 2nd before reverse, or first. Makes the tranny last longer. It stops the gears from turning when you first push the clutch.

I only do it on 3 speeds to 13 speeds.

Automatics, I pause in neutral. I also let it idle in neutral when cold to fill the converter, get the pump started.
