I have this unusual ticking noise coming from the driver front tire. The man that I purchased the car off of did not replace this long spring/coil that went around the brake drum. Is this causing the ticking noise? I checked underneath and I can't find anything rubbing against the drum or rim that would cause this ticking.

Also, can I put disc brakes on my 63? Does anybody have a link for this procedure?

Can't help you with your ticking noise problems, but here's a link to the steps for the disc brake swap. It's touted as being for '64-'76 A-bodies, and I can't say for sure if it'll work for a '63.
Dan....you care to add anything? I'm not up on swappability on the narrow body.

The springy coil around the brake drum was an anti-squeak measure, and its absence isn't causing your ticking. If your car has full wheel covers or trim rings rather than just centre caps, the covers/rings often set up a heck of a "ticka ticka ticka" racket. Try removing the wheel covers and driving around to see if that's it. If not, it'll be a good idea to open up the brakes and see what might be rubbing.

Lots of ways to put discs on a '63. You'll need 14" wheels and some idea of your priorities in terms of stopping power, budget/cost, willingness to change over to the large wheel bolt pattern front and rear, etc.

Another possibility for the "ticking" is the cotter pin for the spindle nut hitting on a dent in the hub dust cover.

I took the wheel and drum off tonight and re-greased the everything. I put that spring that went around the drum back on and I still have it. That's no longer a problem with me anymore I have transmission issues now...
