Post subject: Super 6 VS. JCW 4 Barrel
PostPosted: Mon Jul 23, 2001 3:33 pm
Does anyone have the 4bbl intake from JC Whitney Catalog?
I was thinking about getting either that or a Super-Six 2bbl intake for my '75 Dart.
I'm guessing the 4bbl will add a bit more power...but I'm not the expert.
It is also aluminum, vs. the Super-Six iron (I've heard the iron manifolds are better),
And it costs $229.00. I would just like to know if it would make a significant
difference over the cheaper, heavier Super-Six.

The engine I plan on bolting it to is a '73 with .030" over pistons,
ported/polished head (not finished), and forged crankshaft. I am also in need of a
good oil pump and possibly a fuel pump (I have two stock ones, but I'd like a new
one...). And of course I need a good carb (as soon as I get the intake). I would appreciate anyone's input on this.

Thanks a lot guys,

Jeremy Moore (aka Glitch)

Jeremy, I have used the super six 2bbl set-up. It works very well with a stock or lightly modified engine. I recently upgraded to the Offy 4bbl manifold, and it definitely improved power at all rpms with no loss in gas mileage. My opinion is that while the 4bbl setup gives the best power, the super six gives you the best power increase per dollar spent. I bought a used 390 4bbl on ebay for $110.00 and the JCWhitney/Offy manifold for $229.00. The 2bbl setup it replaced cost me about $60 from a salvage yard plus a $30 carb rebuild kit.

I have an Offy 4 barrel intake that I will sell for $100 plus shipping if you are interested. It was blasted a few years back and has not been on a car since. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I think the heavy foot has a lot to do with it as well as that lumpy cam! My car is pretty mild. 63 Valiant 225 with MP.436 cam, mildly ported head, 9:1 compression, Dutra Duals, and the Offy 4bbl set-up. I have a 904 pushbutton with a shift kit and stock converter. With 3.21 gears and 235/60/15 tires out back, this car will not burn any rubber at all! That's OK - no need to spin my wheels. So it's not the fastest off the line, but very fast accelerating over 40 mph. It out performs a stock 225 1 or 2bbl easily, yet still gets 23mpg highway/17 city if and only if I keep my foot out of that Holley 4bbl.
I'm thinking of replacing those big tires with 205/60/15's to match the front. The difference in height between the 235's and 205's is 1.5 inches. That may help low end performance a bit (and may hurt highway mileage). Any comments on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete Vanderlaan

Well, we have basically the same setup, but I have a manual trans so I got get off the line too And the tiresmoke through second. I have a tiremachine, and a bunch of good used rubber). I had 293's in the back (but I blew out the spiders) and it got the same readings ie. miles/gallon as it gets now off the guages, but hte actual millage has gone down (by the road signs). I think an overdrive will fix it, or something in the 320's. I have a 355's right now. Mine is also a 63 valient (do you ahve a spare hood for my bondomobile??) also dutras toy, one of dougs grinds according to calcams, also about 9:1 mildly ported, forgot to gasketmatch, (in a hurry as usual) I am running a 2 1/2 single pipe joined at the bellcrank from 2 2" pipes off the manifolds, a glasspack and a 2 1/4 turbomuffler, so I might not have enough back pressure (like if any) but it got better after I put on the glasspack last week.
What pipeage do you have?
I have also been having 390 issues which seem to be mellowing (perhaps it was the glasspack) there was a dead spot between idle adn primaries and a fat one between primaries and secondaries. now it rolls on better. Maybe hte thing is cleaning out after the rebuild (I have had that happend, maybe time for redline)

As far as yoiur tires go, I try to always run the same size on all five tires (yes I can count) so I can get maximum (for me) life out of them. Bet you spin those 205's! You have a huge contact patch with the 235's, so it's not just the torque difference, it's a reduction in grip patch.. I have 195's all round right now (hell, they were on the rimms from the wrecking yard, and they were new!) I did have a harder time smoking the 235 60 14's, but I could do it , even with the 2.93 rear end. (snap)

I will let you guys know how I do with this tank o gas. ( lord give me strength or a block o wood under hte pedal)
