So I checked out the '73 Dart that I got my new rear windscreen from (Parts wanted thread) and it turns out it has a 7.25" rear under it. My '70 has an 8.25" currently and I don't want to swap it out for a smaller rear just for the sake of getting a BBP rear end (to match the front disc brake set-up I'm contemplating buying). My question is; are there BBP axles that would fit my rear end? What should I be looking for in the junkyard or are any available new? Where from? I suppose I'd need to determine the number of splines, but having done that, are there parts out there? Anybody else done this?

Thanks in advance,

Nat

The 8.25" rear in A-bodies was only offered from 1973-1976 and was BBP...earlier versions were BBP and came in the 'big' cars, so you must have an 8 3/4" rear currently and just mistyped? (how many bolts and does it have a rear cover?)... If it is a typo and you have an 8.75" rear, you can buy new axles that are BBP, ot have the existing ones drilled and restudded, either way it will cost some $$$, but you'll have the better rear...

Ok, so here's the story. Last fall, I climbed under the rear end and counted the bolts and there were ten. After the last response, I checked again and there are nine. So, either someone stole a bolt out of my rear end, or I've had a 7.25" rear all along and am simply retarded. Now, will the axles from his 7.25 BBP rear fit my 7.25" SBP rear?

Sheepishly,

Nat

Mopar changed the length of the axles between the various years, so you can't simply slide an axle shaft from a 1973 A body car into the housing of a 1966 A body car (assuming they still have their OEM rears)...Axle tubes also had some varience, but for the 7.25" rear you can use the axle shafts if they are by 'similar years'... (1963-1966...1967-1972...1973-1976). So in this case, you'll just need to grab the rear out of the other car as the 1970 shafts will be too short if I remember right... The good news is, if your car had a better ratio, it can be swapped into the other rear end (the down side being the labor and $$$ to do it...)

It gets kind of maddening at times, you might size up that 1973 rear axle, you might be lucky and it has 10" drums instead of some of the later years that got 10's in front and 9's in the rear...

p.s. don't forget the speedo gear out of the donor car so it matches the axle...

D.Idiot;

Thank you sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar. I'm gonna talk to him about price tomorrow.

Thanks,

Nat
