Got far enough ahead of things this afternoon to take the Valaint for more than a cursory shakedown cruise........

Why not Top End the car with the new gears and see if the driveshaft vibration thing is gone? ("new" driveshaft is the stock 65 )

I took the car through all 5 gears hard and wound it up to the top end of 5th (prolly over 100....no speedo).....no vibration.

I noticed a drop in power on the return pass.........and some noise.

Dropped it into neutral ....key off....coasted home.

I think I just wiped ANOTHER oil pump gear.

Hopefully the crank is ok.....but I have to question the Comp cam.

I think I let it cool down and do some checking.....

That really sux. Was there ever a definitive answer for the cause and cure for that problem? I suspect it has something to do with pushing these motors beyond their design but it would be really nice to have a permanent fix for it. Maybe I'll take another look at Doc's cam gear oiler.

No, there never has been any one thing pinpointed as a cause. It was thought to be an issue with the cam blanks having the gear hobbed on at the wrong degree because the main offender was the .528 Mopar cam. It has happened with cams of all makes though.

Well........I got the dist out and did a little looking and feeling around. It feels like the cam gear is wiped out on one side.

Interestingly the nylon dist gear is a little wonky as well.

I havn t pulled the pump and prolly wont till I pull the motor this winter.

The pump was a 100 000 mile OEM that had a very nice gear when I put it in. I figure this was a cam problem......

I didn t really like the Comp 264 cam anyway....it felt like lots was being left on the table.....which is pitifull on a 2 barrel car .

Does the cam often get wiped in these cases?

Well if I was scheduled for Pinks a week from now in LA I could make it. Trouble is this is my "fun car" and my time budget for it is blown.

If I had a cam and lifters here its just a matter of a afternoon with no interuptions.
The reality is I start my fall season on thursday on Vancouver Island....Alberta all the week after and Colorado and Oklahoma the week after. ....oh and yeah....a new roof on one of my production shops before next thur.....and a noisy AC compressor in the Roadmaster.....wipers and exhaust on the Suburban.....

Add to that the fact I have already been through this oil pump gear thing less than 3000 miles ago.

I had hoped to use the Valaint for the Oklahoma City job so I could clean yer clock in StL.

Sandy, I have a .510 Erson I can send you if you want. :D

I'm not sure if I have anything smaller. I know I have a little Mopar and a little Comp, but I think both are smaller that your 264.

It'll be at least next Saturday until I can get to the shop again.

When my .528 Mopar cam ate the pump gear it chipped 2 teeth on the cam. If your took out that much of the cam gear I would guess the oil pump locked up at least momentarily.

Make sure to tear down the motor and look for trash. Most of it is prolly in the bottom of the pan, but you never know.

Crap. Time to get your money back from Comp and get a stock cam reground at Oregoncams.com or similar.

Wish I had a medium cam I could send you, but I just sent my last one off with Slant6Ram...

All this cam talk is interesting. I had a 79 D 100 with a slant, never apart from the factory, one day I jumped in it and 2 blocks from home it backfired and quit. Popped the dist cap and found the rotor like 2 cylinders out of phase! 1st thought was t chain, but something made me yank the dist. right there on the side of the road. Dist. gear was trashed, went and got another one, reinstalled the dist. Fired up and immediately backfired. Yanked the dist. again, this time the flat spot on the cam was right where I could see it. Wound up swapping another slant into it. Well after the fact I debated whether I shoulda rebuilt that orig motor instead.

How many miles on the cam Sandy?

I'm still on 51K on my rebuild and the comp 252 is still holding strong (I used a new melling pump though...And I'm now in need of a new clutch  ).

I have put lots of miles on numerous slants, and never had this problem. What are the conditions, or combinations of parts that brings this on? I remember in the old Slant Six News tech questions people talking about having problems when the went with a high flow oil pump. Is this related in some way?
