Can someone tell me where I can find the date code on a 225? I just bought one that was pulled from a '73 Dart, but I don't know if it was the original engine. |

Take a look at the top of the block, below the frontmost spark plug, behind the alternator bracket. Clean off the grease and see what numbers are stamped. |

I removed the alternator bracket and there is a machined pad at the very top front of the block between the two alternator bracket mounting holes. The pad is ground down smooth with no numbers stamped into it. The only other numbers that I see are the casting number and 225 that are cast into the block. Thanks. |

Mmm. Ground down smooth suggests a fairly heavy deck cut was taken off the block and the numbers weren't restored.

I have seen some lite stamping, that would have the numbers removed by a fairly small cut (.010-.020) All of my 170's that had the deck cut .015-.025, to make them a true zero deck, have no markings left.

What is the casting number on the driver's side of the block (2806830-?)and how many freeze plugs does the block have? See this article for more SL6 block info. DD |

The block has the number that you listed above. It does have the 5 freeze plugs all in a row. I checked out the articles and looked at my '76 Feather Duster and it has the cast crank block with the thinner ribbing behind the water pump. The 225 that I just bought has the ribbing that gets thicker at the block. I can tell that the intake and exhaust manifolds have been removed recently, so maybe it has been rebuilt. It ran great in the '73 Dart that it was removed from. The Holley carburetor has the number of 5502 on it. Is this the correct Holley for 1973? |
