Post subject:  Hellp, on crankshaft to flexplate bolt pattern

Guys,

I debated whether this was engine or trans. but it seems more engine so here goes:

This morning was the great remove the 833 and put in the slant six 727 day. I have a new torque convertor from Midwest and Midwest also provided a flex plate. Well, naturally the plate has the wrong bolt pattern for my crank to flexplate bolts.

I KNOW this seems like the same old question that is in many threads here, all of which I have read, but it isn't the same. I called Midwest and asked if they had a different plate. Midwest, by the way is amazingly superior service, they are not a problem. The slant racer there says he knows of three flexplates and only had the one I had that has the offset pattern. He asked if I had the round pattern.

I found where JeffC and SLant Six Dan were giving numbers on July 14 in the trans. section. Even so, it is unclear to me how to SPECIFY which plate I need...if indeed there are three and the one I have ain't it. I have a large crank hub engine that seems to be from an early 70's application. It has been rebuilt and who knows if the crank was original.

Any wizards got any ideas on how to get the right flexplate?

Thanks all,
rock

AS far as I know, there is only one slant six crankshaft bolt pattern. There are two different center hole sizes, (early, and late). I think there are also two different deminsions for the converter mounting hole bolt pattern (the 4 holes), depending on the dia of the converter (all 904, and some 727, and the large dia 727). He may have sent you a flex plate for a small block.

Remember that the plate will only bolt to the crank in one location, and also to the flexplate in one location. Neither bolt pattern is symmetrical.

From my experance there are 3 patterns 62 and later....
-hemi 8 bolt (heavy truck also)
-V8 standard 62 and later 6 bolt (all v8- exp hemi and heavy trucks)
-\6 pattern 6 bolt.

I could have it backward- but if I recall the small/big block pattern
is offset on one hole more so from the slant, slant is more even all around the crank.

Crank flange center do very late to early on the
slant (and the 273v8), but bolt pattern does not.

Converter bolts all are offset on one of four bolts.

Inlarge the pic of the flywheel & it will give you the bolt hole patter differneces between the /6 & the V8. It also give the measurments between the holes on each.

If you have the plate backwards it will not bolt up either.

Post subject:  I got the 727 flex plate; another other part # that works is

Jeffc, 'zilla, Chaarlie and all.. THANKS GUYS!!

First, I got a new one for.....$4.01 !!!!!

from Transtar here in Raleigh (919) 834 2851. Part Number 12980. It is called "Flex Plate TF 6 Evenly Spaced" Axiom # C406
Of course the "TF 6" means Torqueflite 6 ...the 80's slant six bell 727.

With Jeffc's diagram of bolt spacings I was off to success. The essential problem I had encountered was that BOTH flexplates I had on hand had two bolts close together, or as Jeffc says, "offset" and ther rest nearly evenly spaced.. I needed the pattern of all bolts nearly evenly spaced shown, for example, in ebay 330 155 344 036 . I assumed that because my flywheel only went on one way it had an offset hole so never gave it another thought as I picked up some flexplates preparatory to doing the 727 swap for the 4 speed. The problem only cme to light when getting ready to bolt up the plate.

I started at a restoration Mopar dealership here in town. I gave them Dan's and Jeffc's numbers (from July 14 thread). They promptly told me they were not Mopar numbers, so I pulled out my parts book. They ordered me 4058 428 ... at $35.35 list, $23.50 m cost. OUCH. No pictures though. So I went to another good Mopar dealarship..we got on the locator and found a 428 and a 429, called the places and asked if the holes were offset or even. The person holding the plates in hand said BOTH numbers were offset, so not slant six ones. Back to first dealership and cancel the order. THen that dealer suggested I run over to Transtar and BINGO, for $4.01.

Of course I needed plate to crank bolts because of course I had flywheel to crank bolts...too long for plate. I debated getting grade 8 bolts and milling the heads to slim them down. Then said the heck with it and went back to dealer. The six bolts are part number 6035462. This number is a updated PN of old PN 1949424

My cost...$2.10 each plus tax for $13.45 total. OUCH, but correct bolts and no milling. (I see that a Dodge dealer on ebay sells the same 6 for $26!) OUCH OUCH.

The flex to crank bolts are also available at Carquest in a package of 6, part number 74069. I didn't price em though cause I ws using them as a fallback.

So the long and short is I got the plate and bolts and want to share the numbers that worked for me. Darn if I can rund down the numbers from the July 14 thread, but it is also possible that the person holding 428 and 429 was wrong. It looks like CHaarlie had it...I am holding the 318 plates.

More than you ever wanted to know, most likely but man Jeffc's diagram is great isn't it! Now if only my plate 4 ears match the convertor...
