i just got my 86 van /6 back from the engine rebuilder and have questions. i had them put on one of those exhaust manifolds from 1aauto and there is a huge space between the triangular washer and exhaust manifold. it's tight against the intake manifold. it sounds like there is an exhaust leak but can't really tell if its from there or at the doughnut. Pacific Engine Rebuilders in Tacoma, Wa. did the work and they suck. they wre supposed to paint the engine blue and they did it black. it took them 24 working days to finish when they said it would be no more then 10. they admitted to dropping the block and cracking it so they had to get another one. it sat outside and they left the engine cover off and something hairy lived on the couch i made. the couch cost me $700 to make. it runs pretty rough but i know the carb was bad so i'll get a rebuilt one this weekend. i can already see 2 oil leaks. they tried to give it to me a couple days ago with the old exhaust manifold that leaked. not in a good mood right now! |

Sounds to me as if you answered your own question. Also sounds as if you have ample grounds for a successful lawsuit in small-claims court. |

82truck,had to reply as you're working on a van and they are what I do. Well I did interiors an such for money years ago and just cann't get 'em out of my blood. Now what's with the exhaust manifold? I'm not familier with 1aauto, is it a custom manifold or a stock replacement? There's gearheads on this form that have forgotin more on the /6 than I'll ever know  but I've picked up alot on vans over the years. I'm concerned on what kind of "rebuild" you got if they're dropin the motor,leavin the doghouse off and sendin the rig out as "done" with an exhaust leak, that ain't right.Threaten them with a lawsuit an see what happens.Dan can get you headed in right direction for making it run right, but dadgum it,you shouldn't be the one fixing Tacoma Engine Screwers crummy work  PM me and we can talk vans and maybe ammo choice

has anyone used an exhaust manifold from 1aauto? where the 2 manifolds meet together with the triangular washers there is about a 1/4 inch space between the exhaust manifold and the washer. it's tight against the intake though. 1 of the triangular washers isn't even set straight as it is stickin up in the air. right before it shifts, either i here an exhaust leak or the lifters rattlin. i have alot of things to do this weekend so i won't be at the computer much but i appreciate all responses. |

Doesn't sound right. Both my intake and exhaust are 1/2 inch thick at the washer contact points and they've been milled some. They are original. But I would assume that any replacement exhaust manifold would need to be the same thickness relative the intake. Do the manifolds line up where they meet under the carburetor? Do the runners make contact with the head? Does smoke come out of the manifold gasket area when it's running? |

Yes, I have over 6 months on one now, did not see any issueson fit other than having to remove some metal for water/thremo housing. Ether you have one that has issues or it is not installed right. The two mans should line up across the gap pretty close.. China QC is not the best (crap in other words) so I would lean that direction.... Even with some differance in highth the triagles should bridge and hit both intake and exhaust mans. 1/4" is too much I would think. You may have to pull it and send it back for anouther one...... If I had seen that much differance that is what I would do at there shipping expence...... |

A good idea is plane the port side of the head for a great seal. Even true up the manifolds. |

i looked at the manifolds today and they are the same thickness, but the flat side of the triangular washer is facing out. the side hitting against the manifolds is kind of rounded and they put washers on them so they are crooked. |

Idiots! They put the washers on backwards. I am constantly amazed by the lack of care in service industries. At least that is fairly easy to correct but, dammit, when you pay good money to get a job done someone should care enough to at least do the obvious! I frequently tell my customer service people to go to Chick Fil A and see how customer service should be done. It is a rapidly dying art in this country. |

I have one of those manifolds. Upon test fitting it, I found that it was a tight fit against the intake manifold. Easy fix with an angle grinder. Chinese automotive parts and quality control in the same sentence. That's a joke. |
