I have a 904 that I'd like to install in my vehicle, but I need to replace the front bushing. To remove the front pump, I put threaded rod into the two holes with the large external threads, and then placed bar stock over the threaded rods and across the bell housing. Then I ran nuts down on the threaded rods against the bar stock so it formed a crude puller. I took a half turn on each nut to pull the pump out evenly, and it started to come out, but stopped after it had moved maybe 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. I noticed that the nuts got tighter, so I assumed I had the pump cocked and it was stuck. Also I noticed that while I had tension on it, that neither the inner or outer shaft would turn. Once I released the tension on the puller and use the pump bolts to pull the pump back into the installed position, only the center shaft will rotate by hand...the outer will not turn.
Questions:
*Should both these shfts turn when the pump is installed? In other words, since the outer shaft will not turn, has my letting the pump get cocked ruined my tranny?
*What am I doing wrong in getting this pump out? Is there anything else I could do? I am defeated at this point.

The outer shaft does not turn, it is a stationary support. :D

I am gonna guess that your pump gets tight because it is hanging up on the O-ring when you are pulling it. The pump takes a little persuading to get it out sometimes. :D

It might also help to loosen the front band so the gear assembly can move.
