Post subject:  Redding August 25-26 Race Results

We had a great turn-out and another fun time in Redding thanks to Wayne and the entire Killer Bees - West Coast SL6 Racing Team.
Many of the "regulars" and many new racers made the event.
Here is the group photo we took on Sunday.
Image

Pat, is a new "powder-puff" racer to join the racing action with a stock green 70 Demon. (She is front - center, wearing the Plymouth tee shirt)
She somehow got into the heads of all her competitors... who all readlighted against her. (including me  )
She ended-up in the final, paired-up with Mike Williams... who also has a Demon! So we had a "double demon final" on Saturday!
Image

Mike has been down the track a few time and he knows Pat so he put some "Mo-Jo back on her...
Image

It worked, Pat lit the big red bulb in the final, giving Mike the win.
Image

There was lots of calibration and many of the members that were camping at the track were also treated to a nice Saturday night racing program put-on by the Redding Dragstrip, including a live band and lots of cool cars from the local crowd.

On Sunday, we all lined-up again for time runs, we had a few Inliner club members that also ran in that group. The combined group "over-flowed the single staging lane they assigned us so the track re-suffled the classes and gave us a second lane!
Image

18 SL6 cars made the call for the first round of Sunday's eliminations. Aric Erickson was the fast car there, running 12.80's. Myself and Dave Erickson were running in the 14's and Mike W. & Fopar in the 15's... it worked it's way up from there.
Lot's of Slantsix.org members were at this event including Wicked Six, CeeJ, Kidd, Fopar, RDJ, WhaleMaster and a couple of others.
Image
Image

When we came down the the last 3 cars, good old Glen Terry, Aric Erickson and myself were still in it.
Image

I have to say that I was getting some early Chrismas presents during eliminations and my luck continued when I got the bye run in the semi-finals.
So Glen took care of Aric and I took the bye to get another "data point" on my wounded engine.
Image

Yes, at that point the Lancer's engine was running like crap.
It looks like a piston ring(s) either stuck or broke on the #1 cylinder because the engine kept missing on the high end. It actually stalled-out and would not restart on one of the Saturday's elimination passes. A tow back to the pits and pulling the spark plugs found the #1 plug completely wet with oil.
We swapped-in a clean set of spark plugs and jump started the car, it restarted just in time to make the next round of action.
From then on, the engine was putting-out a good amount of blue exhaust smoke and we were changing the #1 spark plug after every pass.
Image

The car kept getting slower, we kept swapping-in clean plugs and moving up the dial-in time. My son Allen told me I was "dead meat" after doing this drill thru Sunday's time runs and into the 1st round... I told him "it's not over yet",... BTW, Allen was out, I was still in!

So here we are in the final round. I did a "record time" spark plug change and met Glen back in staging for the final.
Image

Glen is a "go for the throat" racer... I have proof!
Image

So after all the times I have lost races to Glen, I finally got one back. Beat him on the tree and his car did not run the number at the far end. I backed out of it a little once I got by him and ran a 14.94 on my 14.85 dial to get the win light... Yes!
Image

So I actually came home with more money then I left with but more important, we had a really good time with a great bunch of SL6 racers.

We have said it before and I will say it again, you really need to make the effort to come-out and join the fun.

The Rumble at Redding couldn't have been more exciting. We actually had 19 cars there but mustered 18 for Sundays finals. Sergio Gonzales had been running faster and faster with his Dart but the gas tank started "dripping" a little so thought he shouldn't take a chance on Sunday.
To show our appreciation of Clifford sponsorship, Sergio brought three brand new sets of Clifford headers that were sent out just prior to the races for three news recipiants.
Dave Erickson again set up the ladders which has any potential "bye " runs already built into it. This really makes things fair and we will use it from now on. There were two groups of potential racers that had heard about our slant6 race at Redding and came into the pit area to talk slant six talk. Both were 'old time' racers from the 60's that wanted to try racing again. Both have slant6 cars already..one a 67' two door post Dodge and the other a 71' Duster. Both are from the Redding area so watch out next year for a big car count from Redding. These two races are really becoming popular and the track magagement wants us to continue to grow in numbers.
Dave and Andrew had a team meeting and wanted to know if there was any interest in adding one more race to the 2008 schedule. Since we have no racing out West for the entire month of July, David thought he could get our group a race at the oldest "still running" Calif. drag strip...Samoa raceway ..right on the ocean at Eureka, Calif. More later on Samoa.
We now have a official team photographer..Gary Nelson has "blessed" us with his camera expertise and this is the second Redding race Gary has "shot" for us. He was out there in the sun all day on Saturday..back and forth from the pit area to the staging lanes to the starting line...Now there will be DVD's available thanks to Gary for all Killer Bee Team members to enjoy. If anyone might want one from outside the group, I am sure Gary might make a copy available. THANKS GARY...
The highlights of the weekend....Aric cut his first perfect .000 light
PJ Jesiolowski (Shirley Muhldowney Two) took all comers out up until she started seeing "Red". Pat made all the 'boys" look bad as she just kept running and running and running all the way to the finals. This shows that you don't need to have a really fast car to be competitive...just do the same thing over and over. Pat and Mike Williams took home $150.00 in cash for their efforts on Saturday.
Dave Erickson had his 34' Coupe running well (14.40's) and when paired with Marty in the finals, couldn't tell who won or lost. It was a matter of inchs...Great race.
Aric made it all the way to the final three and got paired up with Glen. Both had conservative lights and Aric got there first. Beat Glen but ran .02 too fast. Ran a 12.73 on a 12.75 light. I told Glen he should give Aric a 'kiss' for the "freebie". Glen said he would give Aric a pinch on the butt instead.
Doug ran well both days and took home some $$ along with Aric on Saturday when we paired up with the few Inliners that were there. There was over $200.00 in the pot
For those of you that again missed Redding, your loss...The comrodary is great, BBQ all over the place, tent area, big shaded Oak trees for slant6 parking, two separte slant6 lanes for staging...$10.00 entry..$850.00 in prize money..We paid out $$ to all 1-9 places plus "bounty $$".

Lots of good pic's from Redding. All my family is looking forward to the Medford race, we will be trying to take 2 cars there. We will also try to hit the Mopar race in Sacramento the following weekend, but I will be racing my Barracuda, hopefully my daughter, Megan, will race her 65 dart. I think its is PAST time for her to take over, since it is her car.
