| Post subject: | Who uses a Pertronix? |
I just got a good deal on a Ignitor 2 for my slant, how are they? I've never used one so I'm just curious what luck folks have had with them, what kinda coil to use(I have a MSD Blsater 2), and wether a Ballast resistor is needed or not? Thanks. -Jesse |

What's the resistance of the MSD coil? What coil resistance do the instructions say? |

If you read the instructions for the "2" you can bypass the resistor. coil should be fine. In the past have used both with out any problems. just do what the Instructions tell you. |

I used an Ignitor (the older model) for a couple years in my 225. It never gave me any trouble and installed just as easily as a set of points. Only reason I removed it was that I wanted to play around with Megsaquirt-controlled timing. |

Primary resistance on a Blaster 2 is 0.7 ohms with 4.7k ohms on the secondary, the pertronix brand Flamethrower 2 is 0.6 ohms and 10k respectfully. The pertronix website says, "Higher RPM performance is improved when used with new Flame-Thrower II super low resistance (0.6 ohms) 45,000 volt coil, however, is compatible with any induction coil", so I could use my MSD coil then cause th resistance is slighty higher on the primary side, but is lower on the secondary? -Jesse |

I've had mine for about 3000 miles now with no problems. I didn't use the ballast resistor and I have a stock replacement coil. I do keep the points and condenser in the trunk, just in case. I suggest you use lok-tight on the mounting plate. Mine worked loose but is fine now. |

Greasy, I use the Pertronix and the resistor. and use the stock coil. I, like you got a "good deal" on the Pertronix and decided to wait for a good deal on a blaster coil. Well its been a long time and no deal yet and NO problem. WHile I would like a chrome coil for looks I am not conviced the difference in induction makes an MSD coil worth it for me as well as the stock works. Now, I did completely rewire everything with high temp wire and used the plug wires that I see Slant Six Dan likes too. rock '64d100 |

I have 2 of them. 1 in a /, and the other in a 383 for a total of like 12 years now and no problems. They are the older ones and both are connected straight to the coil, with resistor on both. the 383 is running the blaster coil, don't know what's in the /. FYI, tried installing elec. ignig on the / and had nothing but problems trying to get it to run like with the Pertronix. Why?:shrug: So i swapped it back. |

I used one with a stock coil on Project V. This motor pulled strong up to 6000 on my last road course outing before the motor blew! Junkyard bottom end was not up to the task... 210-220HP at the crank (almost 75MPH in the 1/8th). Idle was like stock. I recommend this unit, and it's probably not even necessary to buy an aftermarket coil. Cheers, Lou |

Ok, Im an idiot, I ment I bought a regular Ignitor but already had a Blaster 2 coil and was wondering if they were compatible. I just got all my info mixed up(as usual). In reading the instructions for the Ignitor it said a coil with a minimum of 1.5 ohms for the primary so, I could use my blaster if I get a ballast resistor of a higher resistance to bring everythig back into sync or should I just buy a new coil an quit worrying? Thanks for the help so far guys. -Jesse |

The 1.5 ohm coil still needs a ballast, you need to get the total resistance above 2.5 ohms or so.. With a .7 ohm coil and that much ballast resistance your losing all the energy in the MSD coil.... I'm using a 3 ohm coil with my old style pertronix with no ballast (no problem starting) |
