I just finished replacing my old starter with a mini on my '72 demon. The old one was cooked and would spin but then not stop spinning. The new mini got a blanket and new wires.

The starter works great, but after getting the car all back together I could not start it. I was getting spark, and I got a healthy motor, so I figured it was a fuel problem. I sprayed a little ether and voom! put, put, stop. poured a little gas in the carb- voom! put, put stop.

I got the car after it had been sitting for fifteen years, rebuilt the carb, and I've been driving it every day for a few months. It clogs a fuel filter every three weeks or so. I've been using plastic see-thru filters so that I can tell when one is all browned out. I know Im probably stupid for not cleaning the tank out, but I figured I could just keep changing filters until the tank is clean.

The filter on the car is dirty, but not clogged yet, so I checked the fuel line at the pump (gastank side, not carb side)- pulled it off and nothing came out! Found my problem :shock:

So I figured I would keep on rigging it because the demon is scheduled for a complete overhaul once my swinger is back on the road. I put a longer hose on the tank hard line where it stops in the passenger fender area and blew in it. I felt something move, and when I lowered the hose some gas began trickling out. I plugged it back up to the fuel pump, but still nothing much was squirting up to the carb. I can tell the pump is doing something because the small amount of fuel in the filter was moving around when I cranked the motor.

It was real late and I was tired and frustrated and went to bed, but not before inspecting the fuel system a little because it seems different on my '72 demon than on my 73 swinger. The tank has 2 lines (feed, vent?) that go to hard lines that travel up to the front of the car. I didn't see where the vent went but not to a charcoal can (PO changes? stock?) The hard lines look kind of skinny, maybe they are constricted further by the brown muck in the gastank?

I can drive my motorcycle to work in the meantime (just got a gel seat ) 8) but I want to fix this asap and I am weighing my options:

-blow out hard lines with air, replace soft lines, drop tank and clean out tank and fittings

-replace hard lines with bigger soft hose or hard lines, clean out tank and pump

-set up electric fuel pump with maybe dual filters and regulator, bypass mech. fuel pump (in anticipation of dropping in 408 stroker :oops: dont worry, my swinger will stay /6)

Anyway, sorry for being long winded. Any advice is appreciated.

The sock filter on your sending unit sounds like it could be your problem or part of it. It may have finally clogged up. If you have that much junk in your fuel filter you are better off dropping the tank and replacing it. I just went through the same thing on my Duster. I replaced the tank, sock and fuel filter, fuel pump and cleaned out the fuel line. My new plastic fuel filter is now crystal clear. :D Hope this helps.

I know mancini has them for like 220. sounds a little high for a stamped steel piece, but I guess the demand for 72 fuel tanks isn't so high.

Any better prices from other suppliers?

When I first got my Valiant (inherited) it was sitting for at least 10 years.

No fuel flow, so I put a put an airline on the fuel hose and probably blew off/apart the sock in the tank.

Then I got the fuel filter constantly clogging problem, which I fixed by effectively putting a HUGE filter in front of the carb.

My HUGE filter was an oil filter, followed by a see thre filter, then a mini pressure gauge.

I like the ideas Im seeing. The oil filter as gas filter is a neat idea as a drastic measure! Thanks for the help. I bought a length of 3/8" brake line and cut the flares off. I plan on cleaning my sock and running the bigger hard line up to the front with new rubber to tank and pump. Should work long enough to get my swinger on the road, then replace the tank in a more leisurely way.
