Post subject:  Squeaky belts?

I have a slant six in my '64 Dart that I rebuilt about 2 years ago. Anyway, ever since I built this motor and installed it the alternator belt chirps at idle. I've changed it, tightened it, etc. but the squeak always comes back. Does anyone have a suggestion to cure this annoying problem?

Strange as it may seem the pullys can get glazed and won't allow the belts to grip. Clean up the groves with some fine sand paper or a wire wheel and I'd bet the birds will fly the coup.

The lazy-man's solution for squeaky (new) belts is toothpaste. It's got enough abrasive grit to deglaze the pulleys as the engine runs. No muss no fuss.

That said, fine grit paper and a little elbow grease is still the "best" solution.

I really like the tooth paste idea, just don't use your new tooth brush to apply it. (use your wife's brush, and don't tell her until after she complains that you love your slant 6 more than her)

: Was it a new belt? If you de-glaze a worn belt,

the belt is still slightly under sized and won't fit the V correctly. I had a squealing a/c belt,
tightened it and the squeal didn't change at all.
The sides of the V were worn, and the bottom of the V was on the center of the pullley. New belt, No problem.
