Post subject: | Need Help - Steering coupling |
Ok so I have a new seal, spring, shoes, pins to rebuild my steering coupling on my 73 duster (power steering). I got it apart except for the pin that goes through the shaft..I've hammered on it here for a few hours no luck, tried heat, nothing. I can get the pin so it's flush with the shaft but then Iam stuck. Anyone have any ideas or neat tools that I might try. I probably could have used the pin and just replaced everything else but now that I've hammered on it I can't get the shoes to go on the old one. Maybe I could file the ends and put the new shoes on??? HELP!!!!!! F%$%%$%%Thing... Thanks Brent |

The pin is a 'snug fit' and is worse after 30 years of abuse and road grime...I have had some that just slipped in and out easy with the use of a cylindrical punch about the same size (5/16"?), if it's being a pest, hose the bugger out with some PB blaster for a while...before putting it all back together...make sure to clean the splines in the coupler pot and the steering box shaft, it'll make things a bit easier to get back together (and easier to align the shaft and hole to put the pin back in. -D.Idiot |

What are you using (with your hammer) to drive it out? Maybe you mushroomed out the end. As DI said, find a pin punch with a diameter slightly smaller than the hole (don't want to get the punch stuck). You want the punch to make contact with the entire circumference of the pin. Set the assembly over something substantial, like a bench vice's open jaws, so your hammering on the punch transfers the energy totally to the pin. I don't remember the pin being tapered, so it should come out either side. Keep at it and something will finally give. ![]() Jerry |

Thanks for the advice I've come to the conclusion that Iam dumb...I guess I'll have to pull the steering colum and put the end in a vice and press the darn thing out since the ends are pretty mushroomed. I had tried using a small socket like a punch but to no avail. Oh well I need to get the dash ripped apart anyway to fix my wipers, heater core, and gage cluster anyhow. I guess now is as good a time as any to start there...ug. Until my next question, or screw up. Brent |

I opted to pull my colum as well - either that, or wedge a piece of wood under the shaft to your driveway |
