Post subject: | Max torque 87 octane build recipe |
I'm getting ready to to build a free 68 block that I picked up from a 383 swap. I'm hoping that someone wouldn't mind sharing their recipe with me or let me peek at their ingredients. I'm not trying to go racing with this one. I just what something that can handle hills at more than 30 mph. A 2-barrel intake and carb swap are mandatory with mpefi as finances dictate. Gasket matching and maybe some light port work are in my plans. I would love to run a set of dual-Dutra duals with a 2 inch dual exhaust set-up or a single 2 1/4 set-up. I'm looking for compression ratios, valve size, best cam for my build, and whatever I left out. An auto trans and maybe some 3.21 gears that are in a 8 1/4 rear that I grabbed. Thanks for any and all input. Dart68 |

Hills at 30 MPH! That's no good at all. In high school I had a '74 Duster with a 225. I swapped the 3 speed for a 4 speed, but it still had 2.76 gears out back. I put a Holley 350 2bbl on it. I used to storm up a 6%+ grade at over 50 MPH. Stock exhaust, no port work, no cam change, just the 2 bbl. Before we get into cams, exhaust and all that what's your budget? |

If you stick with stock stall torque converter, then I would follow Sandy's advice except for maybe using a slightly smaller cam - like the Erson custom grind Doc just had made to replace the MP 244 cam. I personally would be comfortable with the Erson 270 or Comp 264, but that will take some tuning. Shoot for 9:1 comp for 87 octane. Bigger valves and some bowl porting will go a long way too. Super Six or Holley 350 2bbl on an Offy intake would work great. For your build, I would use the EPN 1.70/1.44 valves/locks on ebay - can't beat the price and can use 3/8" stem guides. Dutra duals with 2X2" into a single 2.5" (put Y pipe about 4-6" behind the trans x-member) would be great. Have fun! Lou |

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry so late responding. I have very little time to do much of anything but go to work, take care of home, and tend to my little one. I'm going to start taking the spare motor apart next weekend and see what the inside looks like. From there I'll do whats needed to make it right. For right now I'm doing a stock rebuild but figured that while its apart that I should swap the stock cam for something a little hotter. If a remember correctly the factory cams after 68 were a little more aggressive. What was the factory dual pattern cams specs? The only thing that comes to mind for stock cam without researching is the 244/244 that came after the 240/236 cam. Did 70's Dodge and Plymouth vans with the slant six also use the car cams or did they get a RV type cams? Thanks-Dart68 |
