well i am in the last phase of my engine/tranny rebuild install. I was noticing that my transmission was leaking fluid already after I added it. I didnt have the cooling lines connected, so I figured it was coming from those, but it was not. Turns out the leak is stemming from fitting where the linkage hooks up for the gear shifter and throttle position. It is the cylinder with the post sticking out of it. I had a leak before, but did not know where it was coming from (pre tranny removal). This area of the tranny I left untouched.

The tranny is IN the car and bolted in and torqued down. The leak is pretty substantial, so I want to solve the problem. What could cause this? How can I fix it? Do I need to drop the tranmission? (please so no).

I might bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic (reputable), but I would rather not. If it involves removing the tranny though, that is what I will do. My dad doesnt have the patience for us to remove the engine and tranny again.

The neutral switch is down there, and they can leak. That is a sender unit with a wiring harness plugged onto the end of it. It is just in back of the shifter arms.

I checked and it is not the neutral switch. I know it is the linkage above the neutral switch though. the switch was my first inclination, but it is coming from above it and dripping down.

Well, you can pull the valve body out with the trans in the car, but it's not very much fun. If you don't have a clean place to do the job you're better off pulling the trans and doing it indoors.

There is a seal where the valve body stem comes up through the trans case. You need to remove the valve body to replace it. The seal comes with the trans kit. As Joshie said, you can remove the valve body with the trans in the car if you are patient. And you don't need to remove the motor to remove the trans.

I had the same problem with a Cordoba I owned about 15 years ago. The seal is still avalible at the dealership, only a few bucks. Drop the pan and valve body, knock the old seal out and use a large "C" clamp to press the new seal in. Most of the hassle is draining the fluid.

Depends on the year. In the '66 I did, it is a rubber seal that fits into a groove in the trans case.
