How do I wire up a master cutoff switch on a 63 Dart slant 6?

Summit and Jegs both sell kits for this. I put my battery in the trunk but have no master cut-off switch. I do have it fused at the battery. I don;t intend to race the car, and see no need for one unless your tech inspection calls for it at the track.

I meant how do I wire it to shut off the car. If the positive cable is cut, the car will still run if the alternator's good. I need to break the power to the alternator.

The alternator output goes to the battery side of the switch with a new 10 gauge wire. This means your ammeter won't work, but that's the breaks. This is also why my '66 Dart road race car got a volt meter. There are plastic cutoff switches with an extra set of contacts that shunt the alt output to ground through a resistor. The metal switches with the auxiliary contacts can be used to disconnect the alternator output, but I'm not sure they are kind to the alternator diodes.

My road race car would turn 14.6s in the 1/4 with 3.55s and a 4 speed. I went through the traps at the top of 3rd gear with 26" tires. Not bad for stock early A-body V8 exhaust manifolds and wimpy little cam. It would also run 30 minute road races no problem.

How about a relay that drops out when the disconnect is opened and breaks the field winding circuit of the alternator?
The secondary side of the relay could be run through a toggle at the dash or control panel to turn the Alternator off when staging, and then could be turned back on once your out of the traps to start charging the system again.

:?:

I'm no expert on this stuff. Doc? Somebody?

Run a field wire back to a 4 post switch.

I think this will do what you want. It appears to have a set of contacts that break the field circuit on every switch so alternator output is cut. They also list one thats just on/off but higher current rating so it costs more.

Is a stock alternator on a 63 a one wire or 3 wire?

Early alternators used 2 wires, one output wire and one field wire. Later alternators added a second field.
