My Dart needs new brakes. How much am I going to be spending on it. Here's what I need:

1 master cylinder
4 wheels cylinders
front and back brake shoes.(the good ones)
all 4 brake drums

Figure it will cost much more if you buy the chinese stuff first. Because you will end up doing the whole job again in no time.

The drums are probably the only thing that will cost much more. Make sure you actually need them, that yours cannot be machined. I would always change them in axle pairs if one is bad. The good raybestos cylinders are not that much more than the cheap ones. Stay away from rebuilts on cylinders. I have had trouble with chinese cylinders. The pistons and seals can be junk and sometimes the bleeders do not seal unless you crank then so tight they almost break off, which they do the next time you work on them. Good shoes from Bendix or Raybestos are not that much more than the cheap stuff.

Unless you have a shop you work with, Rockauto is likely your best source.

For the drums themselves, try for the heavier, finned '70-'72 front drums. Raybestos #2956R top-of-the-line "professional" grade, cost about $70/ea rather than $60/ea for the #2956 "plus" grade. These finned drums will swap right onto your '63 and help shore-up the 9" drum brake system's big weakness of poor fade resistance.

Be advised you can add good self adjustors and upgrade the hardware (springs, etc.) in your '63. You'll need four P/N 4313 069 shoe-to-shoe springs and two or four P/N 4636 771 hardware packages, from the Dodge or Chrysler dealer or from www.chryslerpartsdirect.com . I can't remember if 4636 771 does one wheel or one axle worth of brakes.

You will also need either Two Raybestos H2526 and two Raybestos H2527 self-adjust parts packages, or four 2944 586, four 6027 559, two 2944 692, two 2944 693, two 2881 686 and two 2881 687 from your source of genuine Chrysler parts. These are components to assemble two left and two right adjustor ratchets.

I just spent $166 on a master cylinder, 4 wheel cylinders and brake fluid.

I found some rear drums off a 70 Duster that are in pretty good shape.

Now I just need front and rear shoes, probably front drums, 5 wheel studs, and front and rear shocks.

Plus I need to put it all together. By September 22.



What would a ballpark estimate be on how much I'm going to spend?

Please forgive my stating what should by now be quite obvious: You will get better and faster cost estimates by spending 5 minutes shopping a few internet car part sites or 10 minutes on the telephone to local parts stores, than you will asking "How much is this going to cost?" on here.

I'm just asking, thinking that someone who has bought all the brake parts would post, to give me a ballpark figure. I don't have the time to go shopping online. I know where I'm going to buy it at. I just would like to know how much it could cost, so I can expect the prices.

I think everyone is missing what I was trying to say.

I wanted a rough estimate of how much it would cost to buy new brake parts. Understand?

I wanted this so that I would have an idea before I went to the store and bought the parts. Understand?

I did NOT want a link to an online shopping store. I did NOT want to be told what kind of parts to get. I did NOT want to be told to call different places for estimates. Understand?

ALL I wanted was an estimate on how much it could cost. Understand?


Now, I don't even give a &#@% anymore. I am buying the parts, and I don't care anymore.

I'm sorry that we didn't respond to your wants in the form that you prefer. This forum doesn't always work that way, hence the name "forum".

Major brake rebuilds aren't something many of us do often. Maybe once when we first get the car, maybe again in the course of an upgrade. Because of that, it's not a number that sticks in the mind.

In my case, I combined a front brake swap with a suspension rebuild, and bought from multiple vendors over a long period as I gathered parts. At no time did I get a single price for brake components. So I didn't have a number for you - or for my wife :wink:

Seriously, the guys here are just trying to help, and they're pretty good at it. Work with us, and everyone benefits.

you obviously have time to ask questions on line about things that a simple phone call could answer, and you have time to wright out a flaming post when all people are trying to do is help. how is it you don't have time to shop on line? UNDERSTAND!
