I have an unusual problem with stalling on hills/grades. My 63 wagon 170 auto has been stalling on hills at stop signs/lights. It had this problem and i discounted it as carb related, but then i switched over to the Super Six setup, and it is still occuring. When it stalls and I fire it up i get a white cloud of smoke underhood, comming from the carb. I think it might be crud in the feul tank as the problem was before and after new intake carb swap. Pleas help as this is my daily driver and i need to problem solve it soon, thanks,
Linc

Fellow wagon owner in trouble!!! How can we help? If I was to guess it really sounds like a low float setting or clogged fuel filter. You may be on to something with crud in the tank. The big thing you mentioned is a puff of white smoke from under the hood. This is bizarre unless you are backfiring through the carb. Does the car feel underpowered at all? It is possible that your timing chain skipped a tooth due to severe wear. Give us more details and do a thorough check for vacuum leaks. Good luck.

rebuilt 170 last year, white smoke from carb, unlikely vacum leak( both manifolds swapped with new gasket), 18 " vacum at idle, little needle bounce, on flat ground its smooth(occasional stumble), plently of power....

No, the float is under the air horn . You can adjust the pump and metering rod but not the float without cracking her open.

What kind of fuel filter do you have? For a metal filter, take it off the car and cut it open with a PIPE CUTTER, not a saw. Your crudded up tank will show up here, if it is clean your problem is not the tank. Of course you'll need a new filter, but it is worth it to maybe not have to drop the tank.

Is the carb a Carter or a Holley?

Good luck

carter BBD , clear plastic feul filter appears clean. Isn't there a filter in the sender pickup in the tank. My suspisions are there, as i had this problem with a differt carb (1 bbl) and now (2bbl).

Problem was too much feul from the feul pump!! The chaeck valve/spring was allowing too much feul overcoming the poor float. My plastic feul filter was swollen and now i need a new pump...

That's good to hear. A cheap and easy fix.
