Post subject:  Master Cylinder 72 Duster Swap Residual valve?

I have a 72 Duster with 9" brakes. I am not ready to swap to my discs yet. I have a Autozone Fenton reman that looks like it was misboxed. It says M1493. It looks like the M1628 for discs.

Can I use this one or do I need the residual valve type.

If it matters I am going to get wheel cylinders and shoes while I am there for the front.

BTW did they use 9" drums on the rear of disc cars?

I have used that type of master with drum brakes before. I never noticed any difference, but I'd rather use the right one to start with. I also tried the AZ rebuilts and had to get 4 before I got 1 that worked for more than a week.

Not that I ever saw. All the A body disc cars I have ever seen were 10" drum.

You are begging for trouble with a "remanufactured" master cylinder, especially one from the likes of Autozone.

Residual pressure valves were discontinued after 1972.

No, only 10".

Hopefully the replacement will last into the winter and I can swap out to the disc set up.

I am going to have to get a third junker to drive while I do that work.

Nothing in stock they can't tell me when they can get the right MC.

I got a disc MC and am waiting 3 days for the parts.

Update: I bench bled the disc MC and installed new shoes, cylinders and springs. Gravity bled the mud out of everthing the lines before attaching to the new cylinders. I put Neversieze on all the contact spots on the backing plates so the shoes can work EZ. On the crescent shaped adjuster cable plate and the groove where the cable slides. Repacked the bearings.

I have almost no pedal travel! I didn't have anyone to pump the brakes but gravity bled it all.

I didn't check the rear shoes. Nothing was leaking so I left well enough alone. These are the original 72 model almost 68K on them.

I am thinking the fronts may be doing the bulk of the stopping. Later today I will jam the brakes in the gravel and see if all 4 are grabbing. I drove it to work all week.

I just checked them. Fronts are grabbing hard! Rear are grabbing too. Just not much weight back there right now. (55lbs in the air shocks)
