Well, I got the oil pump replaced finally. I used a jack to get the one mount up (kept the other one bolted). Then inserted a different bolt to hold a chain. I hoisted on that chain and raised the engine enough to replace the pump. That went well. Thanks for all the help. Anyway, as part of this oil pump replacement, I removed the distributor. I marked all reference points. I replaced it exactly where it was. Now it will not start but it only backfires. I attached a spark tester to the number 1 and when at TDC compression, the light goes off just right. So, why then does it only backfire? I also adjusted the distributor in both directions and kept trying to start but only backfire. I pulled the distributor and moved it a notch each way and tried and still only backfire. Firing order is fine. Before I need a new muffler from all the explosions, I need to get this right. What am I doing wrong? I have done this before but not with this kind of difficulty. Thank you everyone. |

It sounds like you are 180 degrees out of position. Are you sure that you are on TDC compression stroke? DD |

Well, I had it 180 off in the past and it would start but run "weak" I don't know how to describe it. Anyway. When I first put it in this time, it did the same thing so I assumed it was 180 off. Now it backfires but will not start. I guess I can do another 180 spin and try again. Shoot, I have had that thing in and out so many times today, it will probably take itself in and out now on command. |
