Post subject: | Engine dies while driving |
So was driving down the street doing about 50 when all a sudden the engine just shut off. Lucky enough I was going down a hill so I could coast into a parking right next to a Autozone. I tried to restart the car about 5 times with no luck. I popped the hood and checked to see if I was getting gas and spark, I was getting both. I bought a balist resistor and replaced that. The car started and I got out into the road again. I went to give it gas and It shut off on me again. My dad came by and we replaced the voltage regulator and the car started up and made it all the way back home but was spitting out a bit of black smoke. When we got home we replaced the ECU, checked the oil pump and filter, both fine. I took the car out a few days later and it died about half a block from my house. Back in the we garage pulled the plugs and they were BLACK. We got new plugs and adjusted the air fuel screw and on the carb wich was WAAAY too rich. We also plugged a hose off the carb wich was running to a electronic air fuel metering device. We also desconnected the choke because we thought that maybe that was sticking. So the car has been running fine so far but now just taked 5 minutes to warm up. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might have caused this? |

Its fuuny how cars will react to different things. I am inclined to think it was the choke, making the car die, but new ignition parts were doing a quick fix type thing for you. On my 70 Nova, the ignition switch was going out, so when it wouldn't start, a quick jumpstart would make it run again. Strange, but thats how cars work sometimes. |

Sounds like the float sank in the carburetor. Rebuilt your carb with a good kit and new float. |
