well i got a '74 D-200 with a three speed that is shot but have a fresh 904 sitting around i am looking to throw in..problem is i can not locate a drive shaft...all the ones at pick a part are crushed from the fork lifts they use to but em up on the stands.....argh the frustration..anybody have one in So Cal they would be willing to sell??

The D200 have a one-piece or two-piece driveshaft? When I put an auto in place of the 3-speed in my '74 D100 Club Cab with 2-piece drive shaft I had the front section shortened and fitted with a slip yoke as the 3-speed was short and had a fixed yoke.

it is a one piece drive shaft...its standard cab with long bed..i havent poped the drive shaft off the 3speed yet but i know for a fact it is longer and am sure the splines would not be the same....my main problem is the truck has to be moveable thats why i am looking for a complete shaft and not taking it to a shop and getting one made.

Chances are poor you'll be able to find a driveshaft you can bolt in unless you find one from a later pickup that had a 904 originally. The donor would need to have the same wheelbase and rear end to have the right length shaft. Your truck would have had a 727 if had been an automatic originally and used a shorter driveshaft with a larger yoke than the 904.

yeah i figured it was gonna be tuff..the diffrence between the trannys are the 904 is 3 inches shorter...i found a drive line guy a few miles from me i might give a call monday hopefully they might just have to swap out the yoke on the shaft for the 904... i hope

3" shorter will never make it. I had a driveshaft less than 2" too short wobble badly at the yoke.

I pulled my 3 speed and popped in an 833OD. Then took the 833 out and put in a 727. You are right to suppose the spline count on the 3 speed is different from the the other trannys. Do you have a 489 case in the rear end? Different pinons will give you a different length too.

Here is how to measure driveshatft length: You need the vehicle on the ground and level. Put your yoke on the output shaft. Push it all the way on. Then pull it out 3/4 inch. Turn the trans output so that the u joints will be at right angles to each other (N S, E W) between front and rear yokes. Measure from center of curve, front and back, where U jont goes. That's your length. I have several D series driveshafts made up for large U joints. Leme know if you want one.

Sorry, Rock. Beg to differ. There is a difference in driveshaft length between the 7 1/4, 8 1/4, and 8 3/4. But there is no difference in length, between the 741, 742, or 489 case 8 3/4 rears.
