The headliner in my Duster is pretty beat up, so I'm wanting to go ahead and remove it so I can work on cleaning up the sheet metal (if it's nasty) and applying sound deadener. Is there any real trick to removing the cardboard ones, or can I just grip it n' rip it once I get the plastic trim and dome light pulled off?

It's not really all cardboard, it actually has a thin layer of styrofoam inbetween two layers of thin cardboard...(I had to dissect a 'dead' one at a junkyard just to see...)...

To remove the head liner, remove your trim peices above the door (yes all that metal stuff's gotta go, remove the coat hangar hook in the back seat, dome light, visors, rear view mirror...under the metal trim will be some clips (varies by year I see 1973 had some huge wire retainers, which had been done away with by 1974...), remove the clips and the headliner can be jockeyed slowly out of the front and rear windshield gasket, also get a cover for the floor of your car, mopar put a 1" thick 'chunk of insulation' on top of the headliner which is sure to be a nasty brown pile of dustcake...(you may also have to pull your b-pillar plastic trim also)

If you do it correctly, you now have a pattern to make a replacement out of...

Sounds easy enough. The front and rear windshields both have to be removed to install the new one, correct? So far I'm planning on just ordering a new one once I'm ready to install it.

There is no replacement cardboard headliner avalible repro. Dante's does have a plastic headliner to replace the cardboard one though, I was going to go that route when I get that far, it's easier than trying to find bows and replace with a cloth headliner. If you order one of these, post some pics, I'd like to know more about it, I've only seen a pic and a paragraph in MCG when it was released about a year ago.

You can take the time to 'curl' the lip back or have a friend help while you tuck the new replacement under the lip....

There are no OEM/new replacements, I had a couple guys here in town want to borrow my 'spare' 1974 version (the 1976 one doesn't have the holes for the rear view mirror as it mounts to the windsheild...not the roof). The price kills the deal everytime...$100+ to remake a quality repop then because of the size (OSR since it's bigger than 48" by 36")... by that time the price of getting the cloth headliner is about even...

when I re-did my '75 I sprayed it with some super 3M sticky smelly stuff and attached black vynil to it. turned out very nice.

I wonder how it holds up over time Vs. a cloth headliner, and how easy it is to install Vs. the cloth (not figuring in the difficulty of finding bows)...

no photo but Legendary has them made of plastic- there is a photo in the paper catolouge though...

i know that 73dart_swinger bought one, but weather it has been installed yet is a question mark.

I bought one of the ones from ebay a while back. It was also made of ABS. It did not fit from side to side. It lacked about 2 and a half inches total and would not reach to tuck under the trim above the windows.Before I recieved it , I was contacted by the seller who said he had a return on a headliner from a buyer with a dodge sport and would I like that one. He thought it should fit . I told him no I paid for a new one. Well...I think to save themselves money they figured they'd just send me the returned wrong one anyway. I had the headliner for a good 6 months before I got around to installing it. Or should I say trying to install it. I made some cuts on the sides trying to imitate the cutouts for the seatbelt harnesses and rendered it non returnable. So I just wrote it off ...
Good luck and ask alot of questions before you buy one of these.

This may be a stupid question, but what are bows? Once I get my windshields reinstalled, I have my original cardboard headliner to install and I don't need any surprises if I don't have all I need to complete the installation.

You only need the bows for the cloth headliner. They fit into stitched on "channels" in the headliner to help it hold its form when it's installed. I got lucky and "found" a full set, but they are notoriously difficult to find.
