Post subject:  oil pressure woes

im trying to get oil pressure in my newly rebuilt slant. i pulled all the plugs, blocked the carb wide open and disconnected the coil wire and tried to crank it over to see if it got pressure. 0 on the gauge. then i pulled the back bolt on the rocker arm rail, and cranked the engine over. oil spurted out. its a brand new oil pressure gauge and sender. here is the gauge i bought

while it wasnt a big squirt coiming out of the bolt hole, it was more like a gurgle. this means im getting oil pressure right? is my sender just bad?

That is a electric gadge correct? You could have it wired wrong, or maybe you dont have 12v to it when the engine is cranking over. If it has a 12v wire ( which I assume it would) try running it stright to the battery for your testing. Or just simply check the voltage on the wire while a friend cranks over the engine for you.

With the oil coming out of the rocker stud bolt hole, its a good chance you have oil pressure. You might pull the sending unit out of the block & crank it over to make sure there is oil there. If teflon tape was used I have seen a piece get in the orfice of the sending unit and block it from recieving oil pressure.

Get a mechanical gauge and screw it into the oil pump where the sending unit goes and eliminate the possibility of an electrical problem with the gauge. If oil is at the top end of the engine it's going to be throughout the engine.
