Post subject:  msd install???

Hello all, I need some help here. I'm installing a SCI 6300. I understand the wiring for a single pick-up mag dist. I have a dual pick-up in my 87 truck 225. Green from the MSD box goes to ground/black(dist.) wire and violet goes to orange off the dist. , from what diagrams I have read today. I still have the blue and black wires coming from the dist. from the other pick-up. What do I do with them. I was thinking of tieing the two blacks together and the blue and orange together. Before I do any of that, I want to find out the right way. Anybody have some expertize in this area??? Thanks Bob

SCI 6300 - that's basically a 6A with some unknown differences (may be marketing for all I know) that was sold for the sport compact market. The trouble isn't the double pickups, but that I suspect you have a locked out distributor with no advance mechanism. If there's no vacuum advance on the distributor, it's locked out. Wiring it directly to an MSD box will give you no timing advance. On a street car, this isn't what you want at all. You can use a timing computer (either from MSD or elsewhere) to set the timing, or you can connect the wire the stock timing computer had running to the negative terminal of the coil to the MSD box's white wire.

If you do have a vacuum advance, just use the orange / black wires and ignore the second pick-up altogether.

I would think that you need a single pickup distributor from a '70's car or truck.

DO NOT tie any of the wires together. 1 pickup is for "Start" timing and 1 is for "Run". :D

Thanks for the speedy replys guys!!`I think for now I'll go ahead with the white wire hook up. So Matt... are you saying that the computer will controll the timing with the white wire hook up? I did put a super six package on it over the weekend, and runs great. The emissions/lean burn stuff is gone. Is there any gain in switching over to a vacuum advanced dist? Thanks Bob

To reiterate Matt's question, does this engine have the lean burn computer? If you are getting rid of that, does your new ignition module have timing control. If it did not have the lean burn system, then does the distributor have vacuum and centrifigal advance? You will need to control timing in some way.

I am currently using the distributor you are talking about with just one pick up, and it works OK. I removed one of the pickups entirely.

Hello Sam, My Ign.system does not have timing adjustment on it. I just bought a ele. dist. on e-bay 2 seconds ago. It has the vacuum advance on it. I have no advance on my truck right now, she idles nice but goes down the road like a turtle. I put my timing light on it to confirm it. I rev it up just to see about 20 degrees adv timing. I would of like to keep the dist. I have but like you said I need to have and control timing. Thanks for the reply, Bob

Be sure to set the gap on the pickup with an aluminum, brass or plastic feeler gauge. If my old brain remembers, it should be at .08", which is also about the thickness of a business card. If I am wrong, someone here will chime in and correct me, I am sure. The pick ups can go bad, so if it does not run with the new distributor, then you can get new pickups from NAPA. SlantSixDan will have the lowdown on what is the best manufacturer and part number for that. Good luck.

How much did you have to pay for your distributor?

Sam
