| Post subject: | 904 Speedo Gear Replacement? |
I just finished changing the gears in my rear end from 3.23s to 3.55s and I want to make my speedo accurate once again. Do I have to buy a new speedo gear for the tranny? I was told that I may be able to make adjustments within the tranny to accomodate the rear end ratio change...I'm not sure it thats true or not. If a new speedo gear is required, where can I get the correct one and how do I know what I need (# of teeth)? Any help here would be greatly appreciated! |

You will need to change the gear that goes on the trans end of the speedo cable. First thing what year is the trans? Then will need to know the size of the tire, to go along with the gear ratio. |

Ooofff, that makes it harder. The 65 and older speedo gears are harder to find. No source of NOS, just used. Will have to look up the color/number of teeth, you need. Then someone may have one laying around.

In order to figure out which gear you need, we need not only the rear gear ratio but also the tire size you're running. |

Arrgh...this'll be easier to figure out by far if you'll please state your actual tire size rather than its diameter. |

I have a blue one but how do you count the teeth? I get 21-- but on the moparts info it should be grey for 21 --- blue = 19-- and this piece is definately not grey., Lawrence |

What is the dia of the gear? The 65 gear should be about 1 inch in dia, the 66 up gear is about 1 1/2 inch maybe a little larger. You might be looking at the late model gear. The color/tooth count may be different, between the years (eary/late).

It's been a while since I've looked, but I thought there was a tooth count molded in to the body of the gear. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. To count the teeth on other gears and such, I just mark one and count it as number 1 then continue around the gear until I get back to the marked one. Just be sure to not count the first one twice. |
