Know how the dash cap comes off in my '71 Valiant? No screws, looks like it's just held in by clips?

hello,
a tube socket is a good start. the speed nuts go onto those tapered spike pin things that are usually attached to the pad ,and a normal socket wo'nt go on far enough to get the nut.
they will probably be 3/8 inch size.
if you imagine the back of the pad where it attaches to the dash assembly - you will find the row of pins/speed nuts/and each end bolts there.
being VERY flexible in getting under the dash is a BIG advantage. another good tip/idea is to take out the glove compartment and the instrument cluster. this makes access so much easier. :roll:
unfortunately,all the heater tubes and under dash fittings usually have to come out as well to get access.
do'nt plan on it being only a 30 minute job. :twisted:

There are (5) 3/8 nuts along the bottom of the dash pad and (2) 5/16 screws on each end of the pad. They are bolted to the dash. Pull out your glove box and stick your hands up under the dash towards the side facing closest to the driver and passenger. You should be able to feel them. They are a little tricky to get to and you may have to drop your steering collum and pull the gage cluster to get the ones on the drivers side, depending on how small your arms are and how well you can squeeze under the dash on the floor to reach them. If you have A/C its even harder. Not the easiest job but well worth it. Hope this helps.

It's funny most 12-14 year olds will mow your grass for 5-10 bux, it takes 30 minutes of fun in the sun... You give them 5 bux to play twister under the dash for 5 minutes and for some reason they're all over that...
