Well, I've been reading my FSM page by page (on Dan's advice. Good advice:)

The only mention I see of engine priming is to fill the oil pump before installing it. I didn't do this as I knew the engine would be upside down a couple more times during the build.

In addition, the short block I am using hasn't been started in years. I did not disassemble the mill, so there is no break in lube on the rods and mains. Hence, I'd really like to get the system pressurized before I crank that baby.

I intend to fill the oil filter as best as I can.......hahahahaha.......and screw it in before ALL the oil comes out.

What else can I do?

Thanks,

Chris E.

I packed my oil pump with vaseline and cranked it with the plugs removed until I got oil at the rocker arms.Install a presure guage and watch it.The vaseline will break down in the oil after it is started and run for a bit but I would change it out soon.

With the motor in the car you can pour oil down the pump with the filter off. Pour it slowly and you can get a quart or so in there without making too much of a mess.

I usually just turn the motor over on the starter with the spark plugs out until it builds oil pressure. :D

I just did that a week ago, but I had packed the oil pump with vaseline, and had added oil to pump and 1/2 filled the filter before turning it over. I even went so far as to remove the rear rocker bolt and use an oil can and 'back fill' the rocker shaft and passage). Oil light went off after 30 seconds, rocker arms were pulsing oil properly right after lighting the engine off...

Doc has a good procedure also.
