Post subject:  Head Milling ? How do you tell if already done ?

Hello Gang, I have a 1963 V200 Valiant Station wagon and I'm adding some get-up and go. Bought a Super six set-up from a member here and have the Dutra's coming. I saw the group buy also and will talk to Erson about the cam. I have a head that already has the hardened seats but I would like to up the compreesion and don't know if the PO milled any or not. So, how do you tell where you are at ? BTW, the head is off the engine now.
Thanks,
Steve Dameron.

Welcome to the board. The right way to do this is to determine how you want your engine to behave. Decide what compression ration is needed to achieve that then measure and adjust your combustion chamber sizes to achieve that CR. Anything else is a blind shot it the dark and has at least an even chance of leaving you disappointed.

Darklight, thanks for the reply. I would like the engine to be a middle of the road performer. Power band of 1500-5000, with the cam to match of course. It is a wagon after all ,LOL!! I looked up how to measure the CC's , can you tell me from what I've described how many CC's to shoot for ? Thanks.

THIS CALCULATOR might help.

You need to start with a target CR and then measure everything to see where you are. From there you can determine what to do with the head. You need to know the bore diameter (stock + any overbore), the deck cleance (how far down the hole the piston is at TDC) the volume of any features on the piston (stock is flat). I might have missed something there but someone will fill it in if I did. You really should select your cam first then work from there. There just aren't any qucik, easy "cookbook" answers. There's lots of help available here but most of it will be in the form of guidance rather "do this or do that."

Cool, I just talked to Tom at Erson's and ordered the cam, springs, lifters, and locks (group buy still going,he said they have sold about 45 cams) and he gave me a CR to shoot for. I will measure everything and see what to do. I did some more reseach on the site and now think I have a direction. Thanks agian for the help.

Doug came up with two cams for Erson's, one being just up from stock and one a little more agressive, I went with the latter. He said 9.0 to 1.

That would be the RV15M-212/.295 cam... a good choice for street performance.

Run this cam "straight-up" with no additional advance and lash the intakes at .016 and all should be good.

As for the head, you need to cc it to see where the chamber size is now and then "do the math" to deturmine how to best adjust the CR.
