Post subject:  Which carb?

O.K., here's a good solid question......
Which 4-bbl. carb is best for an everyday driver?
If your favorite carb required some major tuning, please mention what you had to do.(Just basic stuff)
Your input will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I personally like the 390 Holley with vacuum secondaries. I ran one forever, and helped a buddy put one on his Dart too. :D

Case nobody noticed I'm always different and difficult.Eddy for me,love them hollys, fought my 390 and cussed and swore and spent money, money, and more.Pumps, squirters, jets and time.Put on 500 and life was sweet, starts, runs goes good,no fiddling around.Don't have to mop up fuel to adjust or change things,it's just sweet. Now if I was to be building a Dorf or cheebie,I might go with a holly but on the slant EDELBROCK.2 cent 8)

A very good carb guy I know says I should run a Q-jet on my slant. I have a Holley 390 and a Q-jet, but right now I'm being drawn to dual carbs. I used to run a 390 Holley on a Clifford intake and it worked very well. All I did to the 390 was upgrade it to a 4150 so I could change jets in the secondaries instead of the metering plate and play with main jets. No shooters, pump cams or power valves were ever changed.

The only 4 bbl, I have run on a slant is the 390 Vac sec. I think I would try a Q-jet on a mosified street slant. Theoriticly, it should work well. Would need some time for tuning. Small primaries for drivability and fuel milage, and "sewer pipes" for power.

O.K.....the holley is winning by a landslide.
The reason I thought an edelbrock would be better, is because it's simpler. :) And cheaper.
I guess I have this vision of spending eight days a week trying to get the holley tuned right.
If I get a 390 holley, how bad is it to re-tune to work with my slant?
I'm trying to get as close to a "drop-on and run" as possible.
I don't mind tuning, in fact I like it; but......
Maybe I just have an unreasonable worry with 4160 Holleys??
Any input is appreciated!

JMHO, but you'll never get a true "drop-on and run" carburetor unless you are buying a carb for a common build of a Chubby 350 :-/ Oh, it'll drop on and run, but if you budget a strip-kit ahead of time and plan on fine-tuning, you'll be happier with either the Holley or Edelbrock.

I voted for the Edelbrock because I love the simplicity of the Carter carb design. Love my Thunder Series AVS as much as I love my stock '69 AVS. Of course those are both on 440s, not slants.... ;-) Holleys are probably a touch more tunable overall and they're more intuitive to tune because its jets, power valve, and springs rather metering rods, which couple the lean/cruise and rich/power settings together. But they're also higher maintenance AFTER you get them tuned, IMO.

I dont have to much experiance with a 4bbl on my slant but for the 2bbl I really like the motorcraft/autolite 2100/2150 it is a 2 bbl but you can get them upto 450 cfm and it is the most basic carb iv ever seen it has a 2 peice body so less prone to leakage and it is the easyest carb in the world to tune in right and it is very responsive.

I vote edelbrock
I have holley also but imo edelbrock is a simpler and better design
never had a problem and I never use air filter lol

I did some same day testing with my old 390 and a 500 Eddy. On that day, the 390 proved itself to be a much better performer. It was a full tenth quicker and 1 mph faster than the Eddy.

JMO, but I firmly believe that a lot of "tuning" done on carbs goes either in the wrong direction, or is done as a band-aid to mask a different problem. I know I have been guilty of that myself, especially in jetting.

My 600 DP that I use on my race setup is pretty much drop-on and run. I have tried rejetting it, but the last time I ran it I had put it back to as delivered.

As far as Eddy carbs, I just plain don't like them much. I have 3 of them, and they don't even make good doorstops, they are too light. I would probably learn to like them more if I spent more time on them, but since I have very little trouble with Holley carbs, I've never seen the need. :D

As you can see this is what I am using now, but I have experienced a 2 X 36dcd7 Weber - complex, fast and all the nice things, so if it was down to amazing performance this setup

the 4150 vacuum secondaries is nice carbs as you see I am using one now, it is easy (ish) to setup and maintain (the webers are fussy to setup, synchronizing and ballancing them takes awhile - and to ad to this everyting in these carbs, including main venturies can be swapped out - so it is very tunable to specific needs

The edelbrock "afb" is simpler, and from what I understand a better design - why this statement is made I do not know - anyone..... :?:

SO IMHO

Best once setup for me WEBER - and it does look so cool - we have a very nice manifold this side (South Africa) but since it will be out of production until yours truely finalize the new paterns - it is about as rare as an original hyperpack - it is not a clifford or offy or redline manifold

It was produced By Chrysler South Africa, as a Pollice interceptor package

Best to setup and maintain 4150 in either 390, 450 or 465

An I honestly do not know enough about the edelbrock

Knock on wood, but we've been very happy with the Holley 390 on our Slanted car. Motor is slightly modified, but built for street driving in mind.

Post subject:  here is a vote for the holley

Hello,

I sure have run them both on a well developed slant, started with Eddy 500, went to Holley 390 (a 4160 modifed to a 4150). My experience is the Eddy is closest to bolt on and go, but the Holley is certainly no tune monster. I was afraid of the Holley is why I tried the Eddy first, and it worked great, just a tad rich. All that is involved in tuning the Holley was tweak jets for the heck of it, change power valve and spring for the heck of it and when set idle mix and idle speed. Then leave it alone. I even put a fuel pressure gage and vac gage on the carb to see what was going on with tweaks, and just leave it alone any more. I prefer the Holley because while it is set it up and let it alone like the Eddy, to me the Holley has more possible tweak combinations, and I like tuning. I am still chasing the perfect advance curve and spend more time on recurving and advance cans than I ever need to on the Holley.

Great info! Looks like a 390 is the way to go.
As an alternate side note....Has anyone ever tried A Quadrajet 2MV??
They only came on 260 Bowtie V-8's, but I had one on a 350 once. It ran like a banshee. And super easy to tune, vs. a full Q-jet. Maybe a good option for a milder 4-bbl Slant setup?
Just stirring the pot.......
