The other day my belt that runs from the crank-waterpump/fan-alternator popped off and after further investigation I realized that my water pump pulley is way out of line. It has been this way ever since I bought it but didnt realize it was this bad. My question is: Could this be a remanufactured water pump (looks newer than the rest of the engine) and the little hub that the pulley bolts to maybe not have been pressed on far enough? Or could it be the result of a wrong pulley. Everything else lines up with the crank but the water pump pulley. The difference is about a belts width. I was just wondering if anyone had ran into the same problem and how they fixed it. Im hoping its just a fluke water pump and thats that but I need opinions on maybe what to look for also! Probably the water pump as you suspected. There are only a couple of slant water pump pulleys so chances are slim you have the wrong one, but it's not impossible for sure. What year and model vehicle we talking about here? The '74 Duster?

chances are if the pulley was on backwards it would look like the belt setup on a corvair (very very off)

Yes.. The vehicle I'm refering to is the 74 duster. I dont think the engine is the original because its orange. The pulley is on the right way and the grooves are the right size its just about a 1/2 to far forward.

I just worked on an old 64 Val that someone had put the fan spacer behind the pulley! Didn't notice it myself for a day or two.

if there is no spacer behind the pulley then the pulley mount is not pressed in enough. but you will have to remove the pump and support the water pump shaft before you try to press it in the 1/2in you need or you will move the the shaft and impeller in so it will hit the block,just use the damper and a strait edge to find the measurement you need before you remove the pump.

IM SO STUPID! After further inspection of other pumps and pulleys I do see that someone had the fan spacer behind the pulley. If I take it out it will be to far in. Im going to take it to a guy and see if he can machine it down to make a perfect fit!

That tells me that you have the wrong top pulley, it is most likely a V8 pulley.

Ok.. my problem should be fixed! I didnt shave the spacer down like I wanted because I suspected I might need the correct spacer if I ever had to change pumps/pulleys. I took it to a buddies machine shop and he pressed the hub on 3/16ths of an inch and all is good. Put it all back together and took her for a spin for the first time in almost a month! I don't really want to drive the car but I want the option available to me if I get the feeling lol. thanks guys!
