So I have this shifting issue with my 63 Valiant (which I posted in the past, I just got back from Indiana from a job and finally started to work on the car again). I replaced the column with another 63, but I still can't shift into third gear (or reverse or first, just hang out in second). If I pull up on the rod for second and third gear (by hand), I can shift into the gears. The tab in the center of the two linkages, doesn't seem to line up right. Are the bushings &#@%? Do I need to adjust the rods? I picked up a 1963 Chilton's manual, but it shows a floor shifter, not a column shifter. Please for the love of God, help me, I miss driving my Valiant!

Oh yeah, I do have an extra column around now, so if anyone needs a column for a '63, send me a message.

I looked at the bushings just a couple of minutes ago on the brackets that connect to the transmission, they seem to have a considerable amount of play in them. Are they supposed to be like that, or are they supposed to be tight?

The bushings should have a "running fit"... that equals free movement with no side to side slop.

Did the car ever have a aftermarket shifter in it on the floor. B&M or Hurst ect. They come as cable shifters and have there own shift leavers. A stock leaver wont work on an aftermarket B&M or Hurst shifter if the shift leaver is either one of them . Must use a stock leaver with a stock likage. Thanks Ron Parker :D

Nope, shifter is still on the column. I took it all apart and re-adjusted the linkages, I can shift into R,1 & , but I still cannot get into third. When I try to shift into third I hear this metal rubbing metal sound, with faint grinding.

63 Mopar if you will send me a e-mail address I will gladly send the pages covering the shifting rod/linkage. I can't seem to figure out how to add them to a post here. My e-mail address is hemitym@ocsnet.net

Hello,

I had this problem for years and felt as if I lived under the floorboard. After buying a floor shifter to put in I found the problem was the bushings in the connections at the column to the shift levers, in other words not at the tranny at all. I felt pretty dumb for not having looked at the parts book I have with exploded diagrams, because the bushings are there plain as day. If you are too wallowed out the rods or levers on the column will be wallowed out too. I just made new bushings on a lathe and got a spare column and shifter set just in case. Never had to use it..come to think of it, if you need complete spare column set (not the tube and all) lemme know. I'd let it go cheap since I put in an automatic.
