Hello everyone! i was looking at my lovely '83 truck the other day, and noticed there was no vacuum at the carb where the PCV hose plugs in. so i figured it was the wrong gasket between the carb and manifold. i had been using the gasket on the left which is thin, and replaced that with the gasket on the right, which is about .10" to .15" thick, and is the original gasket that the truck had when i bought it. the reason i was using the thinner one, is that's what they gave me when i traded in my carburetor for a rebuilt one at the carb shop. anyhow, does the gasket on the right look to be the correct one? i bolted it back on, adjusted the idle air, and i now seem to have working PVC. which brings me to another question, one of the small studs that holds the carburetor to my aluminum manifold unscrewed, how much torque should you give these things? how much torque on the nuts that hold down the carb?

here's another thing: the way i noticed this, is there was some smoke coming out of the PCV air filter. there seems to be a small amount of blow-by. is this normal, or does it indicate i have worn rings?

The gasket you changed to (with the single oblong central opening, notched at both ends) is indeed the correct one. At 0.1 thick, you can stack up three of them to get good heat insulation from the carb, especially if you get heat-related fuel issues. Manifold carb studs, I double-nut and install till they're tight. Loctite (threadlocker) helps hold them in place. Most engines that aren't brand new, running oil that isn't brand new, can show a little blowby smoke under certain conditions, but if you're getting blowby in any easily-visible quantity with the engine just sitting and idling, something's the matter. PCV valve not working, crankcase breather clogged...excessive blowby...
