Post subject:  8 3/4 rear?

I bought a complete rear end that I assumed was an 8 3/4. This one has nuts on the end of the axle like a Model A used to run. It came out of a 66 Fury with a built slant in it.
Does anybody have any idea as to what it may be?

It could be a tapered axle 8 & 3/4 out of a 64/earlier B/large car.

That's what it sounds like to me.

Is this a decent rear end?
I plan on putting it in a 51 Henry J with a 440 in it. Will it handle the 440?
I have a late model Camaro rear in it now and it has already got the pinion bearing.

If no one messed with this rear the carrier should be a 741 case. the big problem is the axles as they are the shim type to adjust the end play. 64 was the last year production but I have seen them in early 65 slant six cars, mostly B bodys. Contact Moser for conversion axles. I run a 451 stroker in a 65 B body at 3600 lbs using the 741 case with no problems. Most people don't like to use the "41's" as they have the smallest pinion bearing size at 1 5/8 I believe. a 742 case uses a 1 3/4" and a 489 uses a 1 7/8". That bad boy should be mighty wide for a "J" but it will give it a true old Gasser look.

Well, they used the same rear end behind the MaxWedges and they seemed to hold up OK.

As long as they didn't put any good tires on them they lasted well.

Sticky tires will kill the axle ends. I have seen them gut the keyway out of the hubs just like a lathe.

You would be better off to find the later type 8 3/4 that does not have the taper axle / "big nut".
The later assemblies are much easier to find parts for, to swap gears in and to adjust.
If the one you have drops right in and works well 'as-is' then use it but don't spend any more money on it.

IIRC they don't have a provision for park brakes either.
