I've never been into a slant before and i was wondering if i need to pull the motor to put in a cam and replace the 30 year old rings. Also how do i know if i need to get new valves, or should i just replace them while I'm inside the motor because they need to be removed for the new valve springs?

You could probably remove and replace the rings with the engine in the car, but you would have a heck of a time. I checked all my rod bearings from underneath, wasnt fun. If you want to do all what you listed then I would pull the engine. As for the valves, replacing them without doing a complete valve job would be pointless, if that was what you meant. I would think the same would go for re ringing. Should rebuild properly if you have the cash.

You *can* do almost everything with the motor in the car. That doesn't mean you should or that it is easier. A re-ring is fairly easy if the cylinders have minimal wear. All the bearings can be changed from below without too much difficulty. I have even swapped the crank with the engine in the car but I wouldn't do that again. The easiest and most likely to succeed method is to pull the engine so that it can be properly cleaned and evaluated. That way you'll have easy access to everything and you're less likely to make a costly error.

Or...
find a different engine, get it ready and swap it into the car.
This will minimize car 'down time' and reduces the chance of parts going MIA while the engine is out.
