| Post subject: | Engine misfires when it shifts at low speeds |
I just got the car painted and put back together, and now it's time to finish working on the engine. I drove the car out of the driveway for the first time in 20 years today. When driving the car it has several misfires/pops when the car shifts through the gears. At steady very low speed shifts, and driving at higher speeds, the car runs great, (a little bit rich). The engine, and tranny, have about 5 miles on them, and were professionally built 5 years ago. The timing has been checked with a light, it reads at TDC, and a new distributor has been installed, and both seem ok. The car runs on the rich side because the Holley 1920 is old and needs to be replaced. Some of the gas may be old, and I am working on burning through a new tank. I am using Dutra Duals, and 2 inch with H-pipe, and Flowmaster 40s. Any suggestions?

I don't have any service manuals handy...but isn't your base timing a little slow? Shouldn't it time around 6 to 8 degrees advance? I'm sure someone else will chime in with the correct specs.. Good Luck Todd |

Thanks for the suggestion. Today we put a timing light on the engine and advanced the timing 5 degrees TDC. It seems to run a bit better, but still misses at the shift points. Has anyone experienced this before? |

If you have point ignition I would check the condenser first, coil polarity second, then the wires and the coil itself. |

Try a fresh set of plugs and get that old gas out. Sounds like when you shift it puts more load on the engine and the plugs are missfiring. Jess |

Jess, Jess Your the MAN! I ran a new gas take through the engine, and the problem is gone. I also changed the spark plugs and it runs great! Thanks for the tips. Bob Brady |
