| Post subject: | EFI conversion / mechanical voltage regulator |
I recently read an article about swapping a non-computerized engine with a computerized engine. The article recommended replacing the old mechanical voltage regulator with an electronic regulator because, according to the article, voltage spikes from the mechanical regulator could damage the computer. This got me thinking about the EFI conversion. I don't know for certain that the computer would be damaged, but I do know that the computer likes the nice steady voltage that the electronic regulator supplies. I had replaced my voltage regulator with an electronic regulator quite a few years ago (JC Whitney P/N 73DY7133U, $9.99) and have had no problems. The bottom line is that if you're going to try the EFI conversion use an electronic voltage regulator. I'm going to include this voltage regulator in the parts list in the EFI article. Thanks for the tip Bob, Most seem to agree that the use of an electronic voltage regulator is a good idea even when using electronic ignition "ECUs", EFI computers should also have steady voltage so this is a good idea.
