Post subject:  Oil Pump Question

Howdy All..
My first post after reading for several weeks. I'm working on a 85 1/2 ton Ram / and I have a oil pump questiion. Does the stand pipe in the filter base come with new pumps, or can the old one be removed and re-installed in the new pump? Thanks for all the good info, I've learned a lot reading this board. ken

The old stand pipe can be put on the new pump, just look for everything
that might be under the stand pipe.

Post subject:  Fopar got it...

The new pumps all come with those 'stubby' pipes on them, you can swap them easily with use of a 1" wrench...it's easier if you have the block out of the vehicle and on a stand, make sure to clear the stand pipe and wash it out like Fopar mentioned... you will also have to inspect your oil pump 'splash sheild' to make sure it's intact (so far one bolt hole on everyone I've pulled has cracked and needed a reweld).

Another good thing to remember is to put the sensor in and tighten it down, but don't over do it...or the housing will bust into 2-3 parts and you'll need a new pump...

everything in moderation

Thanks for the quick replies. I don't have a lot of experience with the slant 6, but thanks to the folks on this board I'm learning. I have the FSM for the truck, but it isn't clear on everything. I think there is susposed to be a spring with the check valve in the stand pipe, but all I have is the check part flopping around in the stand pipe. I have a fresh block on the stand now. Just waiting for my crank to come back from the machine shop. I'm not sure what the "shield" part of the oil pump mounting is, but I'll look it over in the AM. ken
