Post subject:  Swapping pedestals on ralleye mirrors?

I've read somewhere that the ralleye, or sport, mirror heads on some B or E- body cars can fit my Dart Sport A-body, but the bases, or pedestals, must be swapped out.

Anyone have direct knowledge of this and can tell me what combinations of heads/bases will work?

Thanks,
Jerry

hey Jerry. I got a set of E (I think) body mirrors (if you remember, I paid like 30 bucks from both them RH and LH mirrors, chrome and remote) Here's the catch: A body bases are more expensive than a good par of other bodies complete mirrors assemblies. I'm drilling the door on a different location and they will fit good, not 2decent" but really good. They'll end up ahead them vent windows (I need them to be closer to the pillar since I'm tall and the stock location gives me a lot of blind spot.

FWIW I think that wit your car's body panels configuration, it would be even easier to adapt another type of body base.

Yes, I remember when you got them - E body or maybe Cordoba?
I would just as soon keep the mirrors correct for the A body, and also avoid fixing holes and drilling new ones. Granted, the other sport mirrors look good, regardless of the car they come from, but I think I'll keep looking.

I know I read it somewhere about the pedestal swap, I just can't remember where. I have a parts exchange manual, and it provides numbers for the mirror heads but not for the bases.

According to the 1976 manual the head and pillar are serviced as a unit (like that wiper assembly not just the bushing), so even a factory parts manual won't help here.

Good luck on your search,

Yep, I've got part numbers for the mirrors, but as you say, it is for the whole unit. The critical thing to make this work is the interface where the pedestal and head come together. They are held simply by a single screw, but the head has a slight depression molded in the bottom for the pedestal to fit into.

Although several year models have different part numbers, they look very similar to each other in pictures I have seen. They might have slight differences not detectable in photos. That's why I need to confirm the B or E-body head year models that the A-body pedestal will fit.

Any help you can provide to solve this mystery is appreciated,
Jerry

Actually, it's not really a question of part numbers, because I have those available. It's the nitty-gritty question of whether the A-body pedestal will "fit" the B or E-body mirror head. Only someone who has done it or has seen the results will be able to answer the question.

And yes, Dan does have quite a plethora of resources and information. He sent me the entire '74 parts manual.

the answer to that question I can provide: YES. I got a couple of A bases for my mirrors but since my car has a kinda Bish shape on the door panels, I decided to go with the cordoba bases.

So, since you no longer need those A-body bases...
If you want to relieve yourself of them, send me a PM.

And tell me your name again, I should know it.

I would gladly give them to you if I found them, emphasizing on the "if". I have a BIG MESS and plus some time ago a couple of punks broke into my storage and "relieved" me of many many items.

My name's Juan... I'd include it on my signature!

FWIW I got them A primer coated bases on ebay for 10 bucks a piece. Not so long ago.

Juan (duhhh I should have noticed that  ),
Cut me some slack, man, I am 50 years old.

If you ever trip over those bases and feel like tossing them out, let me know.
Otherwise, I'll keep my eyes peeled on eBay for a decent pair.
