I need to get a new clutch for my 64 Dart 4speed. What is a good clutch and heavy duty pressure plate? Can a 10" clutch be used and what bolts can I use? MrSlant@pacbell.net |

My '66 Valiant had a 10" clutch in it when I got it. The guy said it was for a Taxicab application. It bolted right in. aschumers@aol.com |

Go for the 10" unit, found in most Vans, Trucks & HD (Taxi) applications. A good "counterman" will pull the listing up. Don't waste money on the 9 1/4 set-up. (if you need a 9 1/4 clutch set cheap, call me) The trick with selecting the pressure plate is asking how heavy you want the spring pressure, it is a "trade-off" between the pedal pressure and clutch "grip". 1600-1800 psi is kinda light, 2800 and up gets pretty stiff, I'd shoot for the 24-2600 psi range. Superior Friction (Clutch & Brake) in San Jose can build anything you want. www.superior-friction.com (408)436-1101 DD |

I have a '66 Valiant wagon with a '75 /6 and will be swapping in a '76 A-833 in place of the manual 3 spd. Can I use the '66 3 spd flywheel with a 10" clutch set-up? Thanks, Gary Quote:

Yes, the 10 inch clutch bolts right on. You should use the special "tall head" clutch cover bolts so the hex points do not rub on the disk edge, the bolt heads are real close to the disk. DD |

I just grab them off of Trucks / Vans when I see them in the yards. Truth is that you can get away without them if you use a real thick lock washer and the hex points don't stick into the disk. (position the "flats" towards the disk) DD |

I have heard that the truck/van bellhousing have more room for the bigger clutch but obviously there is the question of how well it fits and how well parts interchange with car 4spd parts (particularly clutch linkage etc). rdb787@mail.usask.ca |
