Hi,
I need to replace the side and spider gears in my '72 Valiants rear end and while I am at it I may swap out the 2.76 in favor of the 3.23's. The car is a daily driver around town, not too much highway use and I am not worried about gas mileage. The only improvements I plan to do is front disc brakes, sway bars for and aft, electronic ignition, larger exhaust and possibly the rear gear swap. Will this be a good combo for around town, snappy performance with the a904g tranny? Thanks, Nico

Yep, an A-body with 225 + 904 + 3.23 + decent-size tires (I like P205/70R14) makes a nice combo.

Just for reference I am running a 3.55:1 gear with 26.1" tire (235-60-15???) and turning 3600rpm on the highway at 70mph. I am changing my gear to the 2.94:1 on Wedensday.

You must have a ton of torque converter slip or an inaccurate tachometer, maybe both. 3.55 gear, 26.1" tire should be 3200 RPM at 70 MPH with no slip. 2.94 gear should be 2650 RPM. The numerically lower gear will increase torque converter slippage too.

I just reread your signature. If your torque converter stall is 3200 your gear change will put you below the stall point for freeway cruising. This will put a lot of heat into the trans fluid and make for poor economy.

My 3:23's cruise at 35-3600 @ 80-82mph effortlessly

The 3.23's are much more fun around town then my old 2.76's. I run 235/60r14's (24"tall) and turn 3100rpm @70 mph, while getting 17.8mpg on the highway.

I can "live" with 3.23 gearing as long as I use a real tall tire in back.
In fact, this makes for a good "dual purpose" combo, take the car out to the dragstrip and swap-on some short tires and is gets off the line pretty good.

The only downside to this plan is that the tall tire has lots of sidewall flex, this leads to less then ideal handling out on the highway.
What I need are some small bolt pattern 16 or 17 inch rims.

I just found some OEM 3.07s hopfully and happy medium between the 3.21 and the 2.94s.

Let us know how that works out for you. My set-up originally was a 170/904/3.23 but I swapped in a stock 225 aluminum block. It seems to have an abundance of low end torque without the need for a lot of rpm. I'm thinking the 2.76 would be fine especially with the lower rpm you get at cruise.

Have all you guys had some sort of engine work done?
I feel like my engine is screaming on approach to 3000!
Am I overlooking something?
P195/75-14 Tires and 3.21 Gears (or maybe it was 3.23, I don't recall off the top of my head, either way though)

It takes some getting used to. And yes. See signature for engine work.

What a bunch of babies. :P I have 4.56 gears and 215/70-15 tires, and an 8 inch converter. It would be nice if I could cruise at only 3,000rpm
