Post subject:  Pyrometer location

I am installing a pyromter probe for an Auto meter EGT gauge. It is easiest to put it after the turbo. They warn about installing it in the manifold before the turbo and thus getting chips in the turbo. In that event they recommend removing the turbo, which I would rather not do. They do say it is OK to put the probe after the turbo, but say "consult your tuner or engine builder. Is there any significant difference between the temp before and after the turbo. I know it generates heat in the compressor. Is the heat higher in the down pipe than in the manifold?

The main isse here is not an absolute temp, but watching the rise and fall of it as you tune.

Turbine inlet temperature is good to know and the only way you'll know that is if the probe is before the turbo. You do get a significant temperature drop across the turbine.

I guess if I am to do that, I will have to drop the turbo manifold. I don;t want to get chips into the turbo. Do you think that is a serious concern?

Use a slow speed drill, then use heavy grease on the end of the bit. Drill a little at a time,cleaning the hole out & the bit & regrease. The grease will make the chips stick to the bit. Right before you go all the way through with the bit, give it all a good cleaning & regrease. There will be very little chips left & it will stick to the grease on the bit & should avoid any problems with chips getting in.

Along with the greased drill bit and tap, you could also use a magnet or magnatized screwdriver tip to remove chips after making your hole. I am assuming this is an iron manifold, I've never seen an aluminum exaust manifold.

I can drill and tap the Dutra dual, or weld a bung on the steel inlet pipe for the turbo. Since I plan on one day replacing the turbo manifold with Stainless, I would rather put it someplace where I dont; have to redo it later.

You know, now that I think of it, maybe I should just go ahead and have the turbo manifold made in stainless sooner rather than later, and have the bung put in then. It really is not that hard to take the turbo off. There are two tubes in and out, and three manifold flange bolts, and three down pipe flange bolts.

I know I should think these things through before I start typing. :oops: But often the mere act of reading the reponses, and sitting at the computer keyboard gets the grey matter loosened up enough to think of these things. And I am not cool enough to fool any of you guys about that. :wink:
