Are you supposed to plug the vacuum advance to the manifold vacuum or ported vacuum? I have heard both. Also how should the vacuum pod be adjusted? |

Ported vacuum -- not manifold. And the pre-'73 vacuum advance units are nonadjustable. |

Ah, OK. In that case, don't adjust the vacuum advance unless it gives indications of needing adjustment. A good way to check is to set the engine idle speed to spec, then alternately connect and disconnect the vacuum advance hose while the engine idles and you watch the timing mark with a timing light. if the mark moves as you connect and disconnect the vacuum advance, you need to add a little tension to the spring. Get a 3/32" hex key ("Allen wrench"), insert it into the hose nipple on the vacuum advance, and turn it one full turn clockwise. This should eliminate the vacuum advance at idle, which'll make it a great deal easier to attain a steady and consistent idle (and improve off-idle driveability, too). The one-turn suggestion is just a starting point; use your timing light to verify that there's no longer vacuum advance being applied at idle. |

Dan, While we're on the subject... Who makes a decent replacement vacuum advance canister? Any idea if the Standard Motor Products cans are adjustable? |

It's possible that all the aftermarket units are being made in one factory and just sold through the various brands, but I don't know for sure one way or the other. AFAIK, all the '73+ units are adjustable, even the aftermarket replacements. Could be wrong on that, too. See this post for available advance cans and specs. |

Borg-Warner pt.no.V411 is a nice looking peice that is an 11r can that can be adjusted to start coming in as early as 7.5 inchs of vac., or as late as 11.5 inchs of Vac. If you can find a decent parts store with good parts man,they have hard books that have the cans listed with specs for degrees of advance as well as starting vaccum numbers. HyperValiant |
