The lowers should be the same. Dennis

There were two different pairs of ball joints used on A-bodies:

- upper and lower on 63-76 9" drum, 65-72 10x2.25" drum, 66-72 KH 4 piston discs.

- upper and lower on 73-76 disc and 73-76 10x2.50" drum.

ball joints do not interchange between these two "groupings". i.e. a 76 disc ball joint, upper or lower, could not be used on any year 9" drum brake car.

Almost all 1976 A-bodies were disc brake. There was a federal safety mandate that required discs starting in 1976, however some early production 1976 models may have been produced with drums.

lower ball joints for disc brake cars were heavy duty to accomodate the added unsprung weight of the disc and caliper, however they are the same demension as their drum brake brake counterparts. for example, a 67 disc balljoint can be used on any 9" drum car or a 65-72 10x2.25" drum car as a heavy duty lower ball joint. A 73-76 disc lower ball joint can be used on a 73-76 10x2.50" drum car.

The later set of A-body ball joints, the larger set used on 73-76 disc and 10x2.50" cars are the same balljoints used on all E-bodies and 62-72 B-bodies. furthermore, the 73-76 10x2.50" A-body drum spindle is actually the same spindle used on 62-72 10" drum b-bodies..... now it kinda makes sense why all those B-body fans are scouring the scrap yards for 73-76 A-bodies....

This has not been my experience. If you compare the bolts that hold the ball joint to the spindle assembly on 64 to 72 Kelsey-Hayes disc brake A-body and 9" drum brake A-body, you'll find that the disc brake bolts are significantly larger in diameter.

You could used the "disc brake ball joints" with the 9" drum brake bolts, but it seems quite dangerous to me given all the movement possible.

OOPS!!! I stand corrected. When I bought the lower ball joints for my Duster they did not differtiate between drum and disc. They only showed one number. Sorry! Dennis

Yes the lower ball joints for 62-72 A-Bodies are the "same" except for the mounting thru hole size.
9 inch drums have a 1/2" thru hole, disc have 9/16". I can not tell a lie, I have "drilled-out" a few over the years. (Disc brake change over anyone?)
