I need help, guys! This is my first slant six project, a '74 Duster. I've got most of the details figured out except one. I have gone with Clifford 260 camshaft, stock distributor with a pertronix ignitor and Accel Super Coil/w 8mm wires, and most likely dual exhausts. I'm stll deciding between the Dutra manifolds or Clifford headers. But my real question is about the intake. I have access to a Super Six 2bbl intake from a '78 Volare and have been told this is perfect for a street engine. Can I bolt a Holley 350 or 500 cfm 2bbl carb straight to this intake? I am also considering a Holley 390 or 450 cfm 4bbl with an Offy intake, but have been informed that 4V carbs can be too big for a street Slant 6. Will that be the case in point here, or will a small 4bbl work with the cam and exhaust I have chosen?
Thanks for any information you guys can pass along!

I used to think a 4bbl was too big for a street slant six, but installed one anyway. My car runs better than ever - good idle, no bog or lean surge, great power increase over the 2bbl I had on it before.

I am using an Offy intake with Holley 390, Dutra Duals with dual exhaust, 9:1 compression, stock valves with mild porting, and Mopar electronic ignition. The cam is a Mopar Performance 436 lift 244 duration - milder than the cam you are using.

I say go for the 4bbl.

Even if you go for the Super six 2bbl, that is a big improvement over the 1 bbl, and a lot cheaper than going 4bbl. The Holley 350/500 will bolt to the super six manifold if you use an adaptor. The 350 is a good choice for your application. I don't think you will like the 500 - it is too big and loves to eat lots of gasoline. The stock Carter 2bbl is also a good choice - 280 cfm, which is a 40% increase over the 200 cfm 1bbl.

Have fun with your project!

Thanks, Pete. Do you have any idea how much hp/torque your combo is making? And have you tried any 1/4 mile passes?

TD Performance Products #2086 carb adapter plate works for the large Holley 2-bbl / super 6 intake mate up.

I have never run my 63 Valiant down the 1/4, and given the 3.21 gears and stock converter, I don't think it would do all that well. I would compare it to a 273 powered Barracuda I once had. My guess is the Valiant is a mid 17's car with about 185 horsepower. Better converter and gearing would really wake it up off the line. Once the car gets up to speed, say 35 mph, the power comes on real strong.

I have big 235/60/15 rear tires, which don't help much off the line either. But they look good!
