Start your new topic off with a nice descriptive title.
A little "history" on your vehicle is nice, or just start with current information.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got "hooked" on second generation Barracudas way back in college. Built a 440 powered 67 B'cuda fastback that was super fast, best time at the strip was 12.06 at 116 MPH and we would drive the car to and from the track!

Ran the wheels off this Cuda for 6 years when in 1986, after a late night "runner-up" finish and celebrations, my luck ran out and this ride met its end (I almost met my end along with the car, telephone poles don't "give" much).

Post subject:  I Need another Barracuda "Racer"....

I miss my quick Cuda, I really want another one but my wife knows that 500 HP "street cars" are big trouble.
I had to make a deal, if I get another Cuda, no big block and if it's a racer, tow it to the track.
I said "OK" and we "shook" on it.

A few weeks later I dragged home a new project car. A 68 B'cuda "roller" with an 8 point cage already installed. The car also came with an 8 3/4 rear end with 4.10 gears.

Post subject:  The work begains and it goes slow

Here is a post talking about work being done to get the car ready to race
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installed a "bone stock" 225 SL6 engine and 904 trans. into the roller just to get vehicle operational.
(I hate pushing cars around)
Brakes, suspension and bodywork was done "a little bit at a time" over the course of the next 4 years, progress was slow.

Building a "stroker" 170 Slant engine, I am getting "interested" in reproducing the Hyper-Pak intake manifold to use on this new engine.

The new "209" Slant engine and low first gear 904 was swapped into the "Dragcar" in the Spring of 1994

Post subject:  The 209 Hyper-Pak SL6 goes to the track.

Example of a "day at the race track" progress report message.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
We took the car out to a "sound testing" event held in Half Moon Bay, CA for it's track "home coming".
(10-24-94, a group of racers was trying to get this track reopened, the city later voted NO! )

The runs were made on the 1/8 mile, heads-up tree but "stop watch timing" only. The Cuda ran a bunch of high 9 second 1/8 mile passes.
Nothing broke and we had fun. Car was running a 5.37 rear end gear and was just hitting 3rd at the finish line.
People really liked the Hyper-Pak, We had a bunch of fun. :D

Post subject:  The Racecar gets a paint job and runs a 15.71

Got a great deal on a paint job so had my 68 B'cuda painted, looks much better. :)

Changed the rear end gears to 4.56 and took the car out to Sears Point to do some quarter mile runs, car ran good but the Hyper-Pak and Holley 600 gave it a little bog when I stomped it right off idle, not enough converter for the higher rear gear. I still managed to blow-off a Cramero and a 318 Dart Sport.

Post subject:  Changed Intake and gearing to 4.88

Swapped-off the "Fat-Pak" Hyper-Pak intake for a different Hyper-Pak I just casted-up. This new intake has smaller runners and a divided plenum chamber. Now the engine takes a full throttle "stomp" from idle with-out a bog.

I also scored some 4.88 gears so I need to swap those into the car.
I will give another update once I get out to the track.

Post subject:  Lot's of runs later, there is a "Knock"

We have been running the low block 209 for a five years now, best time has been a 14.26 at 93MPH.

At the last race I see the oil pressure has dropped to 25 psi on a hot idle, it use to be 35 psi. There is also a "rapping noise" comming from the pan so It looks like its time to pull this engine out for a look. I have a 11 to 1 compression "tall block" 198 I can swap-in as a "back-up" engine, this way we can keep running the car.

Have to report back once I tear the 209 motor down to see what has gone wrong, I can't whine too much, 5 years, 300+ passes and some street action on this engine with a 6800 rpm shift point!

Post subject:  Tall Block 198 is in, runs 14.60s

Got the engine swapped on the Dragcar and had a chance to run the replacement 198 set-up down the strip.
Ran a 14. 62 at 92 mph.
This engine is running the same 600 cfm Holley on a Offy 4 bbl intake and Dutra Duals. The combo runs pretty good but is "soft" off the line, not as much low speed torque as the Hyper-Pak "low block" 209 with headers. :? This engine does rev to 7,000 pretty easily.

We took the pan off the 209 engine that came out of the car and found that the windage tray had come loose (broken welds) and that was banging on the crank making the knock. :o
As for the falling oil pressure, the nitride harding on the cast iron roller cam is starting to flake-off and that is tearing-up the oil pump and bearings. We will swap in a replacement flat tappet cam into this engine along with a new set of bearings and weld-up the windage tray to get it "on deck" as another back-up engine. All in all, an easy fix, everything else inside of this trick little engine looks fine.

Post subject:  Swap-out the 198 for a 225...or two

Put a new high compression "stroker" 254 into the Dragcar to get ready for a big Mopar race. This engine broke a piston on the first hard pass.

We could have gone back to the 209 or the 198 but we know how those engine run so we quickly went to "plan C" and swapped the cam and head assembly from the 254 onto a factory 225 short block. We will use this "ginnie pig" engine to test a fogger NOS system we just purchased.

Post subject:  Sprayed the Cuda into the 13's

We got around to filling the NOS bottle and "shaking-out" a new Fogger II nitrous system on the SL6 Dragcar.

Bob Stepp, my son Allen and I took the car out to Sacramento raceway for Friday night Test & Tune, knowing darn well that there was a big devison 7 "Governor's Cup" race coming-up on the weekend, the place was packed & a qualifing mad-house.

Waited for hours to do the first no spray baseline pass, I got paired-up with a 66 289 "Stang" and got the best of him with a 14.63 @ 91.8 mph to his 15.31 @ 91.3 mph. He freaked-out when he stopped by to say congrats. and saw the car was a Slant powered.

We install the NOS bottle and turned the timing back to 26º total. Did a trial "burp" on a service road out at the end of the track and things were not right. Went back to the pits and found an NOS line popped-off and a few other leaks, thrashed and got it all fixed. No big deal because the tack was still working through qualifing hundreds of pro cars.

Back into line, wait and wait and wait some more. Made our second pass at 10:30 pm, got matched-up with pretty serious looking late model 5.0 Mustang. (big hood scoop, slicks, roll cage, etc.)
Knowing I was "out-gunned" and that the run was a heads-up test pass, I decided to leave on the second yellow bulb and redlighted. (.411) Hit the NOS right as the car left the start and grabbed a 60 ft. time of 1.86 to the Stang's 1.96, We gave the starting line crowd a good show by putting a couple of car llengthson that "high profile" 5.0.

Wow, the spray really made the car pull hard, it even sounded different. About 150 feet from the finish line we were past the 5500 redline and the engine laid-down. We watched the Mustang drive-by us at that point. (webmaster Chuck was in the ppassengerseat, along for the ride!) We pulled a 13.21 @ 101.4 mph to the Stang's 12.78 @ 107
The car did not miss a beat, even as we over rrevvedit through the finish. Looks like I need to find some 4.30 gears!
So we took 1.4 seconds and 10 mph off the car's time with a 80 HP "shot". See the link below for more pics of the NOS set-up.

Post subject:  More NOS testing & Melt-Down...

We set-out to run a 12 or blow-up the engine trying, we blew-up the engine :(

Would have had that 12 if I did not space-out at the starting line, I forgot to hold the NOS activation button in my hand.
I opened the bottle, turned-on the system and staged-in, launched the car and had to go grabbing for the button after the car was moving. Got the spray going about 2/3 through first gear and ran the 13.09
(The next big "to do" thing is to get a micro switch trigger mounted to the carb.)

We cranked another 4 degrees of advance into it for the next pass, (was at 25, went to 29 degrees total) The car took-off like a shot but went flat and smoked at half track. Burned the tips off of 3 sparkplugs (1,2 & 4) and the engine seized-up solid after it cooled down.

So...we have some engine swapping to do over the next few months.
See the link for more info and pics.

Post subject:  Time to install zippers...

Out with the old, in with the 209
Everything swapped-in just fine, including a new 8 inch 4000 stall Continental torque converter.
Now it is time to dial-in this "low block" Slant and get it ready for the Las Vegas SL6 race coming-up in March.
We should be able to grab a record in the NOS class.
Here are some pics of the old engine comming out, 13.09 out of a junkyard shortblock then "poof"!....spun #6 rod bearing.

Post subject:  Test N' Tune for the Las Vegas Race...

OK, I will cut to the chase...

12.79 @ 103.66 mph :D :D The Cuda is now in the 12's!!

We installed colder NGK plugs and went to stagger jetting in the carb to run the front cylinders a little richer, that did the trick, no burned-off sparkplugs. The car ran a 12.96 shifting at 6000 and then ran the 12.79 shifting at 6600. I have to swap gearing from the 4.56 to 4.88 so it revs out a little better at the far end.

The 209 runs really strong with a 120 HP shot of NOS

I was hitting the NOS right at the starting line and the car was getting 1.7 - 60 ft times. Surprized a bunch of people with some great hole shots.

So I swap gears after work tomorrow and get everything packed-up to leave for Las Vegas on Thursday, we are ready. 8)

Post subject:  Fun in Las Vegas

We had a great time at the "Mopars at the Strip" race.

The low block 209 did fine, all we did was change the sparkplugs after a 13.35 first pass (some popping) and just ran it. The car kept getting faster. We made a total of 11 passes, all of them with the NOS system activating right off the starting line. The best run was a 12.96 "break-out" pass to end our weekend. This was good for a club record in the NOS class.

Well, it's back to the engine stand to finish-up a 254 stroker / long rod motor and get that swapped-in for the Summer.

Post subject:  Out with the 209 and in with the 254...

It's hard for me to pull a good running engine out of the dragcar but that is what we did today.
The 209 comes back out and goes into "mothballs". This big inch "low block" engine has been real good, built it in 1995 and a minor "freshen-up" in 2000. This engine must have 200+ passes on it and now it's running high 12's on NOS....
Image

Anyway, we pulled it out to make way for a bored and stroked tall block.
My kids helped-out with the swap and we got the motors switched in about 5 hour but I still have some hook-ups to do before we "light it off".
Image

Wish us luck, the "254" is a pretty "aggressive" Slant build-up, I hope it holds together as well as the 209 has.
