Ok, last week end I picked up a '79 power wagon for a $150 and thought it would be a neat project to mess with. It's got a 225 w/the new process 4 speed tranny. I got it home looked around under the hood and dropped a battery in it and tossed some fuel into the carb. It was turning over but not cranking. So I started with the small stuff like changing the spark box, same effect -nothing changed. Changed the coil as well-no difference. This could be a number of things as it has sat for 7 years and I know for a fact that the fuel pump is bad as I tested it it out- but it should run long enough for the engine to at least turn over and fire. I changed out the old ignition stuff for better used stuff I had laying around. Still nothing. These parts were the cap/rotor/plugs and plug wires. I tried cranking it again today and all I got was a slight backfire. Tried once more and all that happened was it wound till the starter till it started to drag and then barely turn over at all. Is there something else Im over looking like a netrual saftey switch or something of the like? Im puzzled....

with an engine sitting this long it need fresh fuel and spark, if you checked the electrial and have spark then you need the pump working to make sure the fuel to the engine is good. priming it is why your getting a backfire in the carb.pull the plugs, spray a small amount of oil down each cyl. and crank the engine, put the plugs back make sure the carb is getting fuel and the battery is fully charged also make sure you have voltage at the coil when the key is in the start and run positions, watch the choke so it doesn`t starve the engine of air and it should start
