Ive just bought a 1973 dodge dart swinger with a slant six but somethings wrong with it thought maybe some one could help me out.

im gonna try to explain this as well as i can, but i need help. Its starts up ok but the car dies and stalls out when you try to put it into gear or if your not on the gas and the whole car shakes like its gasping for gas or air? i dont know whats wrong with it. but once you start on the free way it starts driving ok. still goes slow got it up to about 63 mph. but kinda hard to start and if your not flooring it when you throw it into drive the it dies and if your stopped and its in drive it just dies. So you have to throw it into nuetral before you stop.. climbing up hill floored it goes maybe 15mph but once its over maybe around 50 it will stay at a steady pace..

Just seein if any one could think of anything wrong with it. whole motor is stock. the guy that i got it from didnt no to much about cars and said his dad rebuilt the carb and it ran fine for awhile. but i dont know whats wrong with it. bad coil? idk. bad rebuild? idk some one got any other ideas whats wrong with it?

sounds like u need to jack the idle up. if you gotta do the ol gas and brake at lights...
youll find a screw on your throttle linkage at the carb, pull the air cleaner if u cant find it

Uh...no. Do not "jack the idle up" or randomly fiddle with screws you might "find" on the carburetor. That kind of poke-and-prod guesswork usually creates more problems than it solves.

Welcome on the board. Congratulations on your new-to-you Dart. Your first step should be to buy at least the FSM (and possibly the other two books) described in this thread.

You will probably want to go through and do some tune-up and maintenance work. Advice on parts selection and technique is in this thread; your 1973 is equipped with electronic ignition so no points or condenser is required. It is likely the valves need adjusting; here is the valve adjustment procedure and specs. And since you mention starting troubles, the choke system may need attention. Look extra carefully at the choke pull-off section of the choke adjustment article . Your '73 came with a nonadjustable choke thermostat, so if it is evident there are choke problems, your best bet is to purchase and install one of the electric choke kits .

Beyond that, this '73 is equipped with two emission control devices that can seriously interfere with the engine's ability to run properly. The first is the OSAC system. It consists of a little cylindrical valve mounted to the passenger's side of the firewall. There is a vacuum hose going from the carburetor to this valve, and from the valve to the ignition distributor. It is best to run the vacuum hose directly from the distributor to the carburetor, bypassing the OSAC valve. This helps quite a bit with hesitation on acceleration.

The other is the EGR system. It consists of a valve mounted to the end of the intake manifold, the "hockey puck" looking device mounted between the valve cover and the manifolds, and all of the vacuum hoses and devices in between. If the valve is stuck open or is being opened at the wrong time by a misrouted vacuum hose system, it will cause many of the problems you describe. You may want to pull the vacuum hose off the valve itself, plug it, and see if anything changes.

is there black smoke out the pipe when your driving or is the exhaust clear?if you have black exhaust the thing is flooding or weak ignition,if exhaust is clean you have a big vacuum leak, if your not sure just start with the plugs and see what the look like, something is way wrong if you can only get 15mph up hill, unless your pulling a hemi power drag boat :?

Nice! that was alot of help i figured it had something to do with the vacuum system the hoses are real old and look like they may be cracked. im gonna try what you said about plugging that one hose off and seein what happens i looked at the carb and the choke looks like its a little off set. The guy that had the car before me didnt no $#!+ about cars and tryed to rebuild the carb and im sure he messed somethin up.

But ya im glad i found this site. Thanks alot guys for all the help! :D

Sounds like a vacuum leak might be the culprit. Make sure everything is air tight. If you have a vacuum guage, hook it up with the engine warmed up and see if you're reading at least 17 and above on it. If you're lower than that then its most likely a vacuum leak that is causing your stall at idle.
